I also read the article in the Field. The GL attracted a lot of "anti 4x4" head shaking etc. Imo, it looks a lot more "bling" than a D3, which was probably why.
One positive, albeit a small one, is that I've found the D3 with its massive LAND ROVER decal to be a little more acceptable as a vehicle that might actually go off-road.
The Merc. diesel engines are very nice, also the GL is without doubt a far more luxurious vehicle. Not sure that depreciation would be any better or worse than other big 4X4's though.
The size of the GL could be an issue though, as parking it in a U.K sized parking bay would not be possible. Good for blocking the roads outside schools though
The GL was designed primarily for the U.S.

Yes parking a GL would be a problem. I parked my D3 in the Chinatown underground car park in London yesterday, but couldn't open the door enough to get out from either side!
Anything any larger would be too much hard work. Matt

Well if you drill down the figures they are offering £37300 for mine so if anyone on here wants it for that they are very welcome. Now done 5000 miles.

I have an article in this weeks Auto Express magazine, comparing the Mercedes-Benz GL420 CDI and the Range Rover TDV8 Vogue. The final verdict is that the Range Rover comes first and the Mercedes comes second. I thought about maybe scanning the Verdict page onto my computer for my own personal reading.... obviously not for sending to anyone else (PM me).

one thing I noticed on the GL is that you can manually lock the centre and rear diff or let the car do it.
