Sorreeeee - the old MTR vs "normal" tyre question!
Having had Zero's shod to 19" rims for 57k hugely enjoyable miles and having read through the merits of MTR's from Andrew and the like (having never spoken the number of posts you guys have posted makes you feel like old friends!), I thought I was ready to commit to a set of MTR's.
Then, following a call to the lovely Andy at AJS, that question that I'm sure all non-MTR runners are asked cropped up........are you sure? Bow-locks!
In all seriousness there are only two choices I'm contemplating, ATR's or MTR's. My logical side tells me ATR's are the sensible bet (less road noise, good mileage, similar characteristics to my Zero's etc...) but I reeaaaally like the DFWM look of the MTR's...........50% mixed condition A roads, 30% motorway and 20% stubbly fields and good-ol country lanes - can somebody out there give me enough evidence to justify a set of MTR's or should I really stick with some "standards"?
ps: unlike the affluent of you out there I can only afford one set
I thought only MTRs were available for 19s? I'm in the same situation - just trying to wear out the Scorpions so I can get something more meaty on the rims.
edit - do you mean the Pirelli ATRs? Look like a road tread to me.Previously:

If you are looking for 19" tyres with grip your choices are between the Pirelli ATR and the Goodyear MT/R.

The AT2 from General Grabber are also a good all rounder. Currently looking at a set soon as the Scorpions I had were rubbish compared to Wrangler's.

I've had MTR's on for ages now & after a brief stint bak on my Scorps, it's now the MTR's forevermre. In fact I sold my std wheels a few months ago, so now only have one set.
I wouldn't be witout them, esp during these winter months. Great reistance to punctures & much better through these countryside winter flooded roads than the scorps ever were.
Not as noisy as you might think. Certainly nowhere near as noisy as the STT's (in 17)Bodsys Brake Bible

I have been running MTR's for about five months and I don't intend going back to Scorpions. They may be slightly noisier than the Scorpions but it is, IMHO, a pleasant sound and I believe that it adds to the 'LandRoverness'. I think that the tyres also look good on the vehicle. The first time I drove in the wet (on the road) I was a little bit cautious but soon found that I could drive in the same manner as I did with road tyres.

Hi,
My Scorpians are up for renewal soon, the Discovery has done 17000 miles on them so far and they will be down to the wear bars very soon.
I fancy a set of MTR's. Do they realy give as much grip in wet weather than Scorpions? I don't drive crazy in the Discovery but I don't want that sliding feeling on wet corners.

Grip in wet conditions is very good. I started with scorpions, went to MTR's had a mad turn and went to wranglers, but now on the way back to MTR's again.
If you dont push your D3, you'll notice no change in road behaviour. If you push it in the wet it still takes a lot of provoking to have them slip.
Another plus for the MTR's is that when you hit standing water, it does not get thrown out and back over the front windscreen. like it does with normal tyres. Lost count of the amount of oh'shyte moments since taking the MTR's off.
