I'm glad I'm not alone... nearly did a deal on the D4 when the D3 was in for a service last week. Thing is, they've made it so soft and RR'ish (and so much money) that the nearly new FFRR's outside were looking like better value!

I had a deafener on a 04 plate. 110 commercial TD5 specced up with leccy winders, air-con and county front seats (was the van back). Did 80k in 2 years and loved it. Best part was low company car tax.

how much did it cost to spec like that?

I have to do some pretty hefty trips, down to austria in a day etc, just not sure if my back could cope with that....

I'd love it if it could

In 2004 it was about 16k. I then added one of the aftermarket sound deadening kits and carpeted the van back part. My only complaint was the rather poor heater in winter. I'm 5'10" and never had so much as a whiff of backache.
Oh, and I discovered (quite by accident) that it was just as good at 100mph as any other vehicle, ahem. In those 2 years I never had one unscheduled visit to the dealer either. All I ever did was have it serviced. Having said that, I did feel rather cheated.....it had no oil leaks whatsoever. Most disappointing. Thumbs Up

I must say I'm in general agreement about the D4 and even the last of the D3s, I still personally don't think the colour coding is for me and I idly wonder if they'll ever offer the 'old style' black plastic trim as an option in the future Whistle
I've still one or maybe two years to go with my current D3 and will have to have a good look about when the time comes, I'll still need the size, 7 seats and towing rather than offroad capacity but can't see me paying over £40k for an XS D4 the way things stand. Have thought about getting a very late 09 black trim model but this will depend on the right car coming along at the right price Rolling with laughter

As far as I can see there are no major changes on the D4 from the dashboard back, which is a large part of the vehicle and the improved engine / poorer dash (IMO) just aren't enough to warrant the new model name.

I bought my current car roughly on the following, which shows my personal priorities:

Practicality %30
Looks %50
Brand %20

Only my musings, not meant to offend or wind anybody up.
