Soon to be owner
Hi, I have just joined the site and hope to be contributing soon with some content.
I am soon to buy an LR3 or LR4 with a circa £15k budget.
I'm not bothered about spec, more about condition and mileage.
Apart from the engine differences, would love some "pro's and "con's" of both models please? I plan to do 70% road and 30% off road driving (disused European tracks which can be fairly gnarly).
I also wonder if anyone has fitted external engine and / or auto transmission coolers to their discos for heavy towing? I have had them on several of my previous vehicles and they made a huge difference.
Thank you,
Ben

15k ? Get a D4 if you can, probably going to get some stick but try to find one that’s already had it’s engine changed.
If it was me all over again... the most comprehensive history you can find also. And I don’t just mean main stealer. Some indies etc (I think) look after them far better than a main dealer. Jarrod

Thanks both. May have up to 17k, do love a Tonga D3 and there are some very clean low mile D3's around... but that D4 3.0 with a BAS remap is hard to argue with!
Anyone have any advice on the oil and trans cooler upgrades suggested? ie. anyone done it?
Thanks again! Ben

there is already an engine oil to water cooler inbuilt.
And not very easy to add a separate one.
Gearbox cooler is built into the side of the water rad.

What are you planning to tow? From everything I've seen & read the Disco 3 & 4's are perfectly happy pulling heavy loads all day without modification.
Please complete your profile so we know whereabouts in Hampshire you are.
I'm in Catherington, as you can see.

Thanks again chaps. Is the LR transmission cooler connected with the engine coolant then (ie. Same coolant supply) or is it a standalone coolant system for the trans fluid?
At times I run fully loaded with a 2tonne caravan loaded up to around 2300kg. Across the alps and Pyrenees... which tests most vehicles hard! My current car struggled in both engine and trans cooling, but after fitting Setrab oil and trans coolers it was a different car / encountered zero issues.
Thank you, Ben

yeah the gearbox cooler uses the engine coolant.
You have to be a bit careful, because it also heats the AT fluid up, and you don't want to over cool the AT fluid in winter.
I guess you could do the old cardboard trick!

Thanks Pete, never been a fan of "shared" coolant systems. Will have a think about it all and a play when I finally get my hands on a car. Can thermostatically control a separate trans fluid cooler so wouldn't be too much of an issue and takes that extra strain out if the engine coolant.
