Sold the Disco3, test driving a Disco4 and a RR TDV8 |
|
I've sold my Jan'08 33k miles Disco3 HSE for £24,000 privately and fancy a change. The family think a Disco4 (the '12 model with the 255bhp/8speed) is the obvious choice but I quite fancy a change and am also driving the Range Rover TDV8.
Has anyone else made the change and would care to share their thoughts on either model?
Thanks
Jeremy

Couldn't wait to get back in my D4 after having a loaner FFRR ....
...... but I wanted to take the TDV8 engine with me. ...... always on the road less travelled 🚧
< ‘tis but a mere scratch …….. it’ll polish out.

One concern is the boot size as my Black Lab has to fit in with space for his overnight cage. It works in the Disco but I'm not sure about the RR.
I can also see the RR depreciating more than the Disco4.

Trust me the FFRR TDV8 is but the boot is seriously small compared to a Discovery 3-4
Been there done that brought a Defender

Unnecessary quote removed
I can't believe that 800 miles to SW France with the family for a holiday let alone driving through SW London on the school run would be much fun in a Defender. Iconic yes but impractical for my needs.

One BIG thing to consider is that the new FFRR is out later this year.
You already mentioned depreciation.
Take a look at how much P38 values dropped when the L322 arrived on the scene!

It obviously depends on your own personal requirements and circumstances.
However, I have both and the FFRR is the better car.
I love my D4, but Mrs Whoami's FFRR just edges it overall.
You'll be delighted with either car. 8)

The TDV8 Range Rover was stunning and the engine felt like a turbine. However, the smaller boot and what I suspect will be significantly higher depreciation (it costs £70k with the spec ) mean it's a no go. The 2012 Disco4 is better finished than my 2008 Disco3 and the engine smoother/more powerful but at £27k to change it, I'm not convinced. The salesman told me not to even bother with the RR Sport and that he'd advise customers to choose a Disco4 SDV6 over it.

I think you will be amazed by the improved engine and 8 speed box of the D4
an XS is almost depreciation proof compared to the FFRR - especially as being replaced this year Illegitimi Non Carborundum

Agree with the conclusion but D5 will be two years behind the FFRR replacement if it is the same as last time so there will be plenty of depreciation on a D4 by then.

It was driving to/from the Alps this Xmas which has prompted my move from Defender to D3. It's been brilliant for other roles though

i got close to changing to a RR TDV8 Westminster. The dealer offered 10% off the list making it cheaper than a second hand one. I was shocked by the price of a multi-height twobar @ £1320; insurance jumps from £400 to £900 and it requires a tracker which will cost another few hundred.
Better the devil you know it would seem.
