I know, perennial topic (and yes I have SEARCHed the forum and read everything relevant), but it is getting around to that time of year again...  
Difference this year is that I won't *just* be driving to and from the resort, I'll be driving around the resort more and there is a warning about the steepness of access to the chalet I have hired.
And of course I will have the disco this year 
So...
Spikes Spiders ? (really had some poor experiences of fiddling around with standard chains, wasting hours that could have been better spent, risking icy bits when I know it will be a hassle fitting the chains just for 100m or so...)
Maggi Traks ? Look like a good, slightly cheaper but still quick fitting and safe (sic) alternative to the Spiders but will they be around in five years time (when I need spares)?
or can I really get away with Auto RUDs or cheaper - probably not even needing to fit them the whole trip (as, unlike any car I have used before, the Disco will cope regardless) ?
Given that there is often a clang when I go full lock backing out of the drive, do I risk scraping something really improtant if I do the same when wearing full chains (hence a suspicion that the maggi Traks or spiders might be "safer")
Going to Chamonix with my 255/55 19s hanging off my 08.5 HSE, yes I know where to buy, just looking for real experiences  Very Black 07 HSE. Sometimes with added mud. Sometimes towing a boat. Always grinning.

Chains, sorry can't help and like you am a bit lost in the history of threads. Do I need spacers, don't I etc etc Could do with a set when being a service crew for historic Monte Carlo in Jan / Feb  "To finish first, one first has to finish ...."

I bought Pewag chains, not so fiddly. Fitted on the front only had 5mm clearance so bought spacers. Looks cool but expensive and with spacers might load the wheel bearings more than usual, so only a winter thing. Also use a torque wrench to more than 140nm for the spacers and check them again after 100km or so. Maggi traks would have been easier and cheaper. There's one wheel on my wagon, but i'm still rollin' along, it's the cherokee, they're after me, but I'm singing a happy song

if you are just driving around on tarmac or gravel roads you wont need snow chains, the D3 is more than capable even on road tyres. You do however need to satisfy legal requirements and carry chains

I use Pewags, they are good and strong, mind you there is plenty of room under my Defender.

I tried them on my 19inch wheels last year after we got back from cros and they appeared OK
the wheels were off the car though and the chains had stretched a little since they were new. Not sure if they rub without spacers or are easy to fit if the wheels are on the car. its slightly more hassle fitting them on the car, when its cold, dark and wet Duncan

couldn't get bcb's to fit on my mtr's but perhaps after they've been used would be ok. About 1/2" short last time I tried. Bodsys Brake Bible

it may have been because mine had stretched, about 2cm i think. by the end of the week i was doing the chains up an extra 2-3 links.
I did try them on P-Zero 19 inch tyres so that might have made a difference too. Duncan

Ok, I'm getting very confused now...
I too am off skiing this christmas and it's a legal requirement for me to carry chains for the D3. It's an HSE with the standard 19" wheels and Pirelli Scorpions. I hope and doubt that I'll even need to put them on, so I'm not looking to spend much money, but they should fit if needed.
I've searched through this site but it all starts getting confusing with different reports about what will and won't fit on 19"... any idea's on something cheap that will definitely fit and ideally without spacers? (or do they not exist?) 2005 D3 HSE

Andrew where did you get your Pewags from in Switzerland (and the spacers)?
And which type of Pewags exactly?

If it's any help, I used spikes spiders last year on the wife's Seat Alhambra - they were brilliant! Quick to fit and remove and performed really well. Skipped up the hill like a mountain goat (although we did have winter tyres as well).
Recently got the D3 and will get a set of spiders for this as well - more expensive I know but very easy to use.
