Have to agree that Spiders were great with a Galaxy type car, I have a pair sitting in the garage if anyone wants to borrow them. Haven't got around to buying some for the Disco yet, normally I cheat, have a box of "chains" in the boot should I be searched/stopped by the Gendarmarie but have been really impressed with the capability of the car on ordinary Pirelli's on ice and snow through our village and never been caught out with traction! Spikes are'nt cheap are they!

OK, I've searched and read everything I can find on here about chains and think I've found the best cost/use compromise for very occasional use or legal compliance in Europe. I'm running standard HSE 19" alloys with Pirrelli Scorpions and only want to fit them to the front ideally without spacers.

I think I am going to go for the Maggi Traks (£260), on the grounds that I am more likely to fit them when conditions are marginal. The spider spikes look good but rather more bulky from a boot storage point of view.
The Rud classic auto versions are *only* £57 cheaper than the Maggi traks, assuming that the £13 alloy protectARs are needed (?). Very Black 07 HSE. Sometimes with added mud. Sometimes towing a boat. Always grinning.

they look ok, but I've never use chains before. When I lived in Norway, many moons ago - and a few blue moons too - everyone drove round on studded tyre's, ok a little pricey but you can remove the studs and use them off road too can't you ?? 90 Defender(Daughter driving at the mo)

Doh!
Having spotted that roofbox.co.uk had a set of returned/unused Maggi Trak LT52s going cheap I bought them, only to read on the box that the manufacturers recommend the next model up (LT53s) for 255/55 R19s and not LT52s as specified by the retailer. Awaiting the retailer's comments tomorrow... 
Good thing I wasn't buying them at the last minute, eh?
Update 13 Nov: Apparently Maggi have said that "there are sometimes mistakes on the box" and that LT52s are correct for 255/55 R19s. I'll try fitting them on saturday, but I can't say that I'm filled with overwhelming confidence at the moment  Very Black 07 HSE. Sometimes with added mud. Sometimes towing a boat. Always grinning.

Starting to get really  off with www.roofbox.co.uk....
Tried fitting the maggi traks to the disco today as we are off on Friday - I know, leaving it a bit late
Turns out the Maggi traks they specify as suitable for the D3 19" don't come with adaptors for 22mm studs. They are an extra you have to order...
I'm glad I didn't find this out half way up an icy road in the alps...  Very Black 07 HSE. Sometimes with added mud. Sometimes towing a boat. Always grinning.

roofbox.co.uk realise they messed up, will presumably be updating their recommendation on the website for the D3, and are sending the relevant parts today FOC.
Well done to them.
Which is just as well as I googled them yesterday and saw €40 as a price - which is astonishing, considering the normal set comes with three different sizes - seems a lot. Can't find the roofbox price... Very Black 07 HSE. Sometimes with added mud. Sometimes towing a boat. Always grinning.

Hobgoblin, I am so glad that you asked me that question. I had booked a ferry from Calais to Dover this Friday, and the return from Dover to Calais ten days later....what a plonker 
Ho hum, didn't cost much to change the booking...SWMBO will be most amused 
We are in the evening 7.20pm...kids last day of school so can't leave any earlier.
