Snow chains are a legal requirement, when it snows the police will setup road blocks on the mountain roads and make the drivers fit snow chains, if they don't have snow chains they will get turned back. Having said that we have always been waved through the road blocks and don't even get stopped As you are taking a van then I would suggest you take chains or leave the van at home
We will be leaving England Friday night and should be in Courchevel by 09.30 Saturday morning Miles door to door.

thanks for that have been to same place before but with a people carrier its a place called venosc in the bottom of a valley i had chains for that also got chains for my transporter T5 auto but wasnt sure if i needed them with a 4x4.
Eropcar are adamant that a 4x4 with winter tyres does not need chains, but I wouldn't want to risk getting turned back with summer tyres.
You only need chains on the mountain roads, so if you are in a valley, no problem.I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.
