Spider chains - good product! |
|
Before we saw sense and got the Tonka we had a Galaxy. We drive down to Montalbert (la Plagne) to ski. We got the Spider system that fitted the Galaxy wheels and were the only people carrier charging up and down the village when the snow had just about stopped everyone else. Amazing things. You had to fit a plate onto the wheels before say leaving UK, attached the Spikes onto them in moments. Got ours from Roofbox up in Cumbria. have to admit they look weird, people loved to stare (you could almost see them wishing that the car was going to get stuck, it was great to grin and go!)

I have a set of Spiders that I've used a number of times on my Alfa 156 when skiing in the Alps; they are brilliant. Small SUVs on normal tires all over the place while my front wheel drive (with a very heavy 2.4 5 pot diesel) swanned past them. You DO get odd looks from folks, but you can fit them in under a minute per wheel and they don't wrap around the inner shoulder of the tyre so don't foul any suspension parts or brake pipes.

Interesting to read all your comments. It should be remembered that no matter how good a vehicle may be your tyres are the only link you have with the ground. The D3 is no lightweight and once slithering down a steep hill will take some stopping. Far better to be equipped with chains than to place to much faith in your vehicle. Serial Depreciation Victim

Can't get enough of the snow this year, so off again in a couple of weeks to Alpes D'Huez having only been there a month ago. Really just a good excuse to put the machine though its paces, looking forward to using the All terrain mode etc,. Although having spent several nights going through the posts am extremely confused about whether to fit Chains to front or rear. Manual says should be fitted to front but some here say should be on front.
Heavy duty chains that I had for the Motorhome don't fit so going by a majoirty representation here, went to Roofbox.co.uk and bought the Rud Compact V Grip chains for my 255 60 R18s. I have fitted them to the front and there is just enough clearance, but not too happy at the minimal amount of gap. Rear fitment would not give me any clearance issues, but I can't quite undertsand the physics of having the chains on the back.
Would appreciate some guidance.
