Snow chains
Has anyone tried to get hold of snowchains for a D3 with 255/55R19.
Unless you spend nearly 350 quid with LR it seems fairly impossible due to a lack of clearence in the front wheel arches. 2 firms have said you can get away with putting them on the back as long as you stay slow and on road??
I went through this exercise about 10 months ago and had to fit a 17*8" wheel with 245/70/17 Cooper Tyre to allow enough clearance on the front wheel.
This will allow you to fit a proper 4WD chain rather than a light duty car chain.

Any issues with the site let me know!
The handbook states not to fit snowchains on the rear even though anything will fit on the rear as there is plenty of clearance.
There must be a good reason for this Warning in the handbook.

I use SCC Super Z6 cable chains on the stock front 19" wheels/tires. They only require 6.3mm of clearance on the inside. Works fine; only needed to use them twice, however. No idea if these exist (or are legal) outside of North America.
Yes, Land Rover only allows chains on the front... and, in theory, only recommends "Land Rover approved" chains.

Thanks guys. apparently if you are using the car on rough terrain the snow chains can rumpture something on the back.
Ho hum.
Here's to leaving the chains in the boot and having plenty of sunshine and drinking on the terrace.

At the LRE winter course which I attended in Finland about a week ago, the chains used on the Disco3 where König Model 255. Looking at the company's web site, www.konig.it (it has an English version), I think they must have been what is called there 'T2 No Problem'. And, indeed, they were easy enough to mount (we had plenty of practice!). The web site includes a configurator (under 'My Chain'), which offers sizes 255/55-19, 255/60-18 and 235/75-17 for the Disco3. I'm not sure of exact prices but I guess they are around €150 (say just over £100) in Germany.
Here's a picture of the chains on the Disco3 (there are more in my gallery):
The Defender in Finland also had König chains but a heavier weight model. I think the instructors would have preferred these but they wouldn't fit on the Disco. Seemingly, the Disco chains break quite frequently off-road (the instructor had a shackle as first aid in his pocket).
Off-road we fitted chains on all four wheels. The instructor suggested, however, that chains on just the front should suffice for normal roads.

Just come back from the alps with far too much snow. Car was fantastic and copped with 18 inches of snow with chains on the back wheels. and was fine in 8 or 9 inches without. snow etting and hdc also made a big difference. If in anything very thick its important to turn of the dsc.
Bythe way cruised on french motorways very happily at 95/ 100 mph but did have to pay a 90 eur fine. Ho hum.

Yes, there's maybe that - but then you could drive around in your Disco instead
Thought I would resurrect this thread as there have been questions about snow chains lately. The ones LR used in Finland with Espri can be bought in the UK for £129
Now I know this will lead those with £400 uber chains to howl in horror, but for those needing a chain suitable for alpine road use for a ski holiday, these would seem to be fine (particularly as LR use these same chains in arctic on-road conditions)I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.
