Hi,
I would like to buy 2 pairs of this model:

http://www.schneeketten.com/index2.htm
255/55-18 7,0mm

Is it a good choice ?
Is there any risk of damage (D3 with 255/60R18 wheels)?

I will use the same snow chains with my defender (265/75R16 or 235/85R16).

You're probably right! In the almost twenty years I've had my own car here, I've never needed chains. The roads are usually cleared pretty efficiently and problems mostly occur during any snowfall. However, then it's often a case of one stuck, everybody stuck, so being prepared doesn't always help.

Ditto. Have to say that in 15 years of driving the Rocky Mountains in winter, I have never needed chains on a 4wd vehicle (knock on wood). The plows can generally keep up in moderate to heavy snow, and when they can't they close the roads. Also, interestingly the chain laws here only apply to commercial vehicles. Personal 4wd vehicles with M+S rated tires are always permitted unless the road is explicitly closed. Worst case scenario after a 28" blizzard was having to clear 2 wheel tracks in the driveway to get to the plowed road.

Cheers,
Dave

I can only speak for myself, but I only have mine to wave at a Gendarme should I get stopped on the road to or from the village where we go skiing. Decent tyres and some common sense are all that's needed. Had some Spike Spiders for my Alfa 156 and they were used in anger a few times, but never in our L200, the 90 or the Disco

Unless I ever sell my chains, in which case they're the best thing since sliced bread and deserve a hefty premium..... Laughing

Are the above suitable for HSE wheels? I spoke to Land Rover and they want £509 for a set of LR chains for anything larger than 18 inch wheels.

cheers

Well, lets put it this way, they're the right size.

Whether the holding pin and bracket clatter on your steering metalwork is another matter...

I don't have any Konigs but I know that when I checked for an Audi, the Konigs wouldn't fit because the mounting hardware was too big. The Audi needed very flat hardware

Seek their advice, preferably in writing, make sure that their returns policy is sensible and make sure they fit / clear before you leave home. You'll need to practice anyway because guess what - it'll be snowing when you need them Very Happy

My response is to Zarnd's post - I was a bit tardy

I've used the Konigs now a couple of weeks.

I'm using them on 17" tyres the T2250.

Easy to put on and work great.

I use Pewags. They fit with 5mm clearance on the front (255/60 R18) but I put spacers on when I change to winter tyres anyway, just to be sure. Looks great.

Hi,
Is it possible to fit 4 snow chains on 255/60 R18, D3?
The owner manual says only on rear tyres, I think.
Thank you
Giuseppe

the skidrive web site says that for electronic 4WD (which i think the D3 is) you should use 2 set of chains. what is the suggested way to do this. front wheels, back wheels or all 4 wheels with chains on?

Here is what Skidrive say about the use of snow chains on 2 wheels.

This is a subject which can be tested and debated at ridiculous lengths!

In our opinion, using just 1 pair has two issues:

a) The un-chained set of wheels will spin easily. Electronic traction
control will detect this and distribute all of the power to the wheels
with chains on instead. This is fine, but means you're now driving a
full time 2 wheel drive vehicle, which completely defeats the object of
4x4! You're also left with a very heavy vehicle trying to move on snow
with only 2 driving wheels, which may make it less mobile than 2WD vehicle.

b) The wheels with the chains fitted will increase in diameter. If the 4
wheel drive is of a design which locks the front and rear wheels
together, each set of wheels will either lose a degree of traction, or
end up pushing the other set along. In adverse conditions, this could
conceivably cause transfer box damage, or accelerate tyre wear.

If you use 4 chains, you negate both effects, so we recommend this on
all 4 wheel drives where practical. I think you'll probably find Land
Rover's recommendation is based largely on the lack of clearance on the
vehicle. We can usually supply lower clearance or zero clearance chains
to get around this issue.

Snow Chains

Have read through a few posts regarding Snow Chains as I will be driving to the Alps in January.

I have a D3 HSE with 255/55/19 tyres. Looks like I will need chains for front and rear and wondered if anyone can recommend chains that they have used in the Alps on a D3/4, for this sized tyre. Would like to avoid paying a small fortune if there are any non-LR chains that are of decent quality at a reasonable price!

Any advice appreciated please.

Not the same tyre size as you (I run standard 235/70 R17s) but for what it's worth I purchased fairly cheap RUD Classic V snow chains for about £120 online (pair for front only as LR recommends) just because they are a legal requirement in France when winter driving in the Alps.

However I have never needed to use them over the last 4 seasons as the D3 is perfectly capable in the snow without them, terrain response did the trick for me. Experienced some fairly huge dumps of snow too including one of the largest snow falls in 20 years in 2008 without any problems at all driving on freshly snow covered roads with 2m snow drifts rather side Very Happy .

For the first trip I was running the standard fit wranglers, after that I have been running ATRs (Cooper Discoverers) all year round and have so far never had an issue, the D3 has felt very sure footed in the snow. So my advice after four seasons of driving to the alps would be to get a single set of fairly standard chains to fit your D3 to cover you legally but I doubt you will need them, unless you know you're going to be off road and in the tricky stuff of course.

Have fun Thumbs Up

(not going this year so green with envy Big Cry )
