I know this has been covered before but I am looking for a simple answer, as in yes or no, I have 2 sets of RUD-matic classic V chains and we are heading off to Orcieres for skiing over Christmas, question is, do I need spacers or not  , I am going to put the road tyres back on, 255/55/19's Wranglers. I'm not as good as I once was........but I'm as good once as I ever was.

i would say NO if you are using them for short tarmac journeys, and YES if you are doing more extreme off-road driving.
there is pleny of space between the chain and suspension of the rear but only about 1mm on the front.
i fitted 35mm spacer on rear and 30mm spacers on front last year using pewags
for road use , i wouldnt bother. Duncan

Cheers for that Duncan  I would only be using them on the road should they be needed, it is just that the law says they must be carried. I'm not as good as I once was........but I'm as good once as I ever was.

i wouldnt bother with spacers then, not worth the expense
If its only on tarmac then i would almost guarentee that you wont need to use them. we drove off road on the crosiere last year without chains for a couple of days and the D3 was very capable

I was under the impression that the standard tyres were better for the likes of sand and snow, apart, of course, from the weeker sidewalls, they tend to float as opposed to digging in. I'm not as good as I once was........but I'm as good once as I ever was.

On tarmac i think they will be more than capable. we used STTs in icy mud etc.
however, ive never used the D3 on std road tyres in poor conditions so cant talk from experience Duncan

I'm getting really confused by all this snow chain advice. 
Going to Austria skiing just for 1 week over xmas. I don't expect I'll need the snow chains but it's a legal requirement to carry them. Under the circumstances, I'd like to know that if I do need to use them they would fit without ripping the front suspension to bits! I'm also running 255/55 R19" HSE wheels but with Scorpions. Obviously I don't want to spend much money as I'm hoping not to use them!
I thought I'd got to the bottom of this, but now I've read the latest RUD catalogue, the serial numbers of what will apparently fit contradict their web site?
Anybody know what will fit (front only) and is cheap enough for legal minimum/very occasional use? 2005 D3 HSE

Isn't the rubber in MTR's too hard and lacking in silicone for snow use? I thought the softer compound of a road tyre would work better in the snow?

CC, just stick them on the rear. there is plenty of clearance.
however, best way to satisfy your self is to fit them here at home and see for yourself what the clearence is. that way you will have your own piece of mind. Duncan
