Snow Chains

Heading up to the Alps and sorting out teh snow chains. Read loads of posts on the subject of fitting snow-chains on the Disco with the 255\55 19" wheels, which I thought were saying LR ones area rip off, but go to snowchains.com and you can get some cheaper ones, fit to the front, no probs.

Just phone Snowchains and they say that the only ones they do have to be fitted to the rear and are at "own risk" (caveat against the D3 manual which says front and LR ones only.

So - just short of £400 list for LR, or £99 / £149 for unapproved, at own risk ones.

Anyone with a proper none salesman view please?

On the Crosiere Blanche we used chains front and rear, with wheel spacers.

I got my RUD ones from roofbox.co.uk for about £100. They probably won't stand up to substantial use or real off-roading but will get me out of any scrapes on the way to the Alps at Easter. Plenty of clearance without needing spacers and whilst not exactly an easy fit, go on fine in the end.

Roofbox.co.uk have 3 or 4 different models which vary in strength and ease of fit.

Like with everything, you get what you pay for.

Thanks for all the replies. Options (without spending vast sums of money) seem to be the ones from snowchains.co.uk at £120 inc delivery - fit to the rear wheels only due to space around the front wheels without knocking important bits of the car off Smile, apparently a lot better quality than the RUD; or RUD from roofbox.co.uk @ £100 inc delivery. I've got the 19" wheels, where space seems to be a premium

Roofbox website says to fit their's to the front. Being the real thicky here, what's the difference with front or rear fitting on a 4x4 (I had always thought you went for the drive wheels. Can only assume you get better steering or something?) - and some more - what's the difference when spacers are needed?

As RUD say they are official suppliers to Land Rover, are the ones they sell at just under £200 the same ones that the stealers offer for just under £400?

Only getting them to be legal on the trip to the Alps, if the roads are anything like when we have flown, there won;t be any snow on the roads much before we hit the village - and even that was just a light dusting that was cleared - here's hoping for loads of snow on the slopes though (quite a lot forecast this week, and I hope it stays around and snows some more for another couple)

I would have thought that grip from chained rear wheels giving forward momentum was a bad thing if the front wheels couldn't steer ?

Need a BMW driver to comment on that one

doesn't matter which snowchains u choose, but fit to front not back wheels for better steering and warranty issues
