Well 5 minutes after posting that D4s were more reliable than D3s I unlocked and got in my car and got the message "Smart key not found refer to handbook".
Funny old thing, the handbook is useless so phone call to LRA.
A technician called me back to say "hold the key under the steering column, there are three raised bits where the key used to go, and press the button", needed to be pressed twice, but it has got me home.
Tried the other key, just the same, going to try a hard reset and will see what that does. Joined the BMWX5 45e group

Quote:Funny old thing, the handbook is useless
Come on Dave...put your glasses on
Quote:The keyless start backup can only be used
when the message Smart Key Not Found -
Refer to Handbook is displayed in the message
centre.
1. Position the Smart Key flat against the
underside of the steering column cover
with the buttons facing downwards.
Note: There are markings on the cover to
help locate the correct position.
When the Smart Key is correctly
positioned, it will be recognised by the
vehicle and the message Smart Key
Recognised will be displayed in the
message centre.
2. Firmly depress the brake pedal.
3. Press and release the engine START/STOP
button.
Once the engine has started, the brake pedal
can be released if it is safe to do so.
If the Smart Key is not recognised, or the
engine still fails to start, consult a Land Rover
Dealer/Authorised Repairer.
IF THE ENGINE FAILS TO START
Note: If the engine fails to crank when the
engine START/STOP button is pressed and
there has been a recent collision, the fuel
system inertia switch may have been tripped.
Seek qualified assistance.
Make sure that the brake pedal is not
depressed. Switch on the ignition (see 78,
STARTING THE ENGINE) and check the
instrument panel for warning lights and the
message centre for warning messages (see 56,
INSTRUMENT PANEL MENU). Seek qualified
assistance if necessary.
Switch off the ignition.
To reset the immobiliser and alarm system use
the valid smart key to lock and unlock the
vehicle (see 5, UNLOCKING THE VEHICLE).
Note: The following information applies to
petrol engine vehicles only.
If the engine persistently fails to start.
1. Make sure that a valid Smart Key is inside
the vehicle.
2. Firmly depress the brake pedal.
3. Ensure that Park (P) or Neutral (N) is
selected.
4. Press and hold the engine START/STOP
button until the warning lamps illuminate.
5. Slowly depress the accelerator pedal fully
and hold it in the fully depressed position.
6. Press and release the engine START/STOP
button. The engine will begin to crank.
7. Release the accelerator pedal when the
engine starts.
Once the engine has started, the brake pedal
can be released if it is safe to do so.
If the engine still fails to start, or fails to crank,
consult a Dealer/Authorised Repairer.

Title `Smart Key Not Found` message intermittently displayed.10my onwards
Category Electrical
Last modified 05-Apr-2012 00:00:00
Symptom 204000 Instrumentation
Content
Note: For additional information please see SSM 51558
Issue
A customer may complain that the "Smart key not found"message is displayed intermittently in the IPC (Instrument Pack message center). The message may appear when closing doors or pressing the start button, and will result in a non-start condition..
Also if the driver’s door is opened / closed with the engine running a second key scan will be initiated. If the key has been moved to a position in the vehicle where it is not recognized by the RFA the "Smart key not found" message will be displayed.
Cause
RF signal tuning inside the vehicle, when the Smart Key is placed in a particular location / orientation / position e.g.
On Evoque this could happen if the key is in the center console cupholder area.
On Range Rover Sport, Discovery4/LR4 & Range Rover if the key is placed on the center console by the clock or HVAC (Heating Ventilation & Air Conditioning) control module.
Action
When the "Smart Key Not Found" message is displayed, make a note (if possible)of the exact location / orientation / position of the Smart Key when the message was displayed. Remove it from that location and place the Smart Key next to the IAU (Immobilizer Antenna Unit). Which is located on lower drivers side fascia for all models except Evoque where it is under the steering column. Press the start button once the "Smart Key Not Found" message has cleared from the IPC.
NOTE: If the user does not allow the message to clear, the IAU will not perform a Smart Key Scan and the vehicle will not start.
After confirming that all Smart Keys are functioning, advise the customer that JLR is aware of the concern, and is working towards a software fix that will be released in the near future. In the interim if the "Smart key not found" message is displayed please move the key to another location within the vehicle.
Under no circumstances should Smart Keys be replaced for intermittent “Smart key not found" messages being displayed, unless after following the above process the key will not function as required.
the other SSM51558
refers to have lcd backlit devices near the key which can impeed the signal

Just had the error today with an RF source in the car.
I had to take the telepeage thing off to scan the bar code at a station which couldn't read it. Opened the door and when I got back in key not found message.
carried on driving and stopped an hour down the road turned off and on again and the key recognised again. I can only assume I confused it with the telepeage unit near to the smart key whilst it was being re scanned.
all well again with mr telepeage back on the windscreen
CC may the odds be ever in your favor

Although I never had the problem, my dealer applied an update/recall about this about a month ago. Worth asking your dealer if you have issues.
