Small Camping Trailer

Evening people,

I am currently away with work and when I go away the ideas start to flow. I have read in great depth the Sankey trailer builds that have gone on here and I Bow down to you guys great final products.

As with most people I don't have the money to buy one off the shelf. I am considering building a small one just for touring around the uk/ france. However I want to keep things low (to start with) cost etc..

I have an old unbraked trailer that has an extra long draw bar in my yard at home. The tub is rotting but the chassis is solid and would need minimal work (from what i remember).

I don't want anything near the size of some of the ones that have been built on here (Wiggs, great job btw Bow down ). If I can use this chassis that would be ideal but the problem with it is it is unbraked. I know that if I keep the weight of the trailer and the loaded weight less than 750kgs then I am fine, but can this be done??

Another positive for me keeping it unbraked is that I am 24 and I have done my trailer test allowing me to tow upto 3500kgs braked etc... however my girlfriend has not and if we were to go to france I would like the option of her taking the wheel (only when necessary of course) Thumbs Up

I only want a small sink, cooker area, storage, electrical cuboard, table and space for my fridge. I was going to construct it from steel box section for the frame and cover with aluminium sheet, insulated etc with some plywood partitions?

I know ideally it should be braked and if I had a bit more money I would buy a Sankey (a few on flea of bay for about 300 ish) and go that route but at the moment not really possible, I am hoping to keep the cost of the whole build right down. I have some box section, aluminium sheets etc... so think i could build the body with what i have.

Do you think it could all be fitted in with gear at the 750kg or do you think I should forget it and wait till i can get a secondhand Sankey? or I could build the frame the right size to fit a Sankey, so that I can start the frame on the chassis I have and then transplant it to a Sankey when i can afford one (lets face it with work etc it won't be built over night Rolling with laughter )

What are peoples thoughts?

Take a look at Phoenix trailers (Bridgnorth), I've got one with mesh sides and looking at turning that into a camping trailer Thumbs Up

Duncan that is about the size I have got with a slightly longer draw bar. I was going to remove the tub and build a frame etc..

i guess it all depends on how heavy the frame ends up being Thumbs Up

Sailorboi....I'm with you 100% as want to do the same thing, although I think I'm going down the Sankey route as they are heavy duty, great off road and quite reasonable on the at at the moment. I want cooker, fridge etc and perhaps a roof tent on top.

Need to sell a few things first to make room and provide cash, but will watch your thread closely and hopefully start my own soon (ish)

Have you thought of a NATO or normal hitch? Uncle Ray does a adaptor tat we can use Thumbs Up
