slipping out of drive

When in 'D', the car can slip into 'N', it's as if the selector isn't quite settling in the 'D' position and you get a sort of 'clutch' slip effect.
Could something under the console be obstructing this?
I've seen how to remove the gear nob, how do you remove the plastic overing the gate?

It's the pivot which is accessed from underneath. It's no drama to fix and there is 'how to' somewhere on here, no doubt by Mikey.
