Sleep Mode
Perhaps a stupid question but how do you kow when a Discovery 3 is in sleep mode? What are the conditions needed to get it to "sleep"?

Either locked or unlocked and after about 5 mins after key removal from ignition. I believe an easy sign is the handbrake light on the dash goes out

What is the purpose of the sleep mode. Why doesn't the Disco go to sleep as soon as the ignition is switched off ?

Yep, 30 mins for yours to go to sleep and 20 min for the pre-MY07 D3s.
By comparison a D4 with no TPMS takes just 3 mins to nod-off when locked….zzzzzzzzzz

Old thread but it's top of Google search so to clarify,
The D3 shuts down in stages.
Stage 1, about 5 minutes handbrake light will go out
Stage 2, about 30-45 mins. Not sure why this varies but it does! Turn on reading lights, boot lights etc. They will take about 30 mins to turn off. Then the disco is as asleep as it will ever be with a battery installed.
To remove battery you only need to wait for stage 1 as per the handbook and under bonnet instructions. Personally I keep mine connected to a second battery, a necessity with most modern cars.
