Hi,
First off I'd just like to say great forum.
We have just brought our first D3 and very recently joined you guys. I have what maybe to some a very stupid question. However it's also worth noting it's the first auto we've have ever owned and first car with a this stupid electric handbrake. That said the question I have is this, when parking the truck, do you;
1. Put it into park, then turn off the engine?
2. Put it into park, then apply handbrake, then turn off the engine?
I'm under the impression that in park all four brakes are applied. If this is case l'm assuming applying the handbrake too is just a fail safe?
Currently I use option 1, and throw a few wheel chucks under a wheel. The D3 is our second car and taking into consideration I also work from home honestly it will rarely get used. The old car this replaced just use to be left in gear, and chucked.

Hi, welcome!
When the autobox is in park, no brakes are applied. Just the gearbox is locked..
That function is fine on flat and only slight sloping surfaces.
When Parking on steeper slopes or on ferry’s as an example, apply also the handbrake.. that wil lock both the rear wheels..
The electric handbrake will work /come in also when the engine is not running, it does if the button is applied..
You do not even need the key inserted
It wil disengage automatically when you drive off... (normally) although i always deactivate it myself after use Best regards

I would have thought it would be.
Handbrake, park position, engine off from what i remember of my driving test
The handbrake needs regular adjustment, i do mine every 12 months. If they get too far out of adjustment it can cause problems with the EPB unit.

you may not be aware of the benefit of the electronic brake.
If you are at traffic lights (e.g first in the que) or on a hill.
If you have the E brake applied and in D while waiting, when you are ready to to go, simply press the throttle gently and it will release the brake for you.

Sitting in D with the handbrake on is OK? No damage to the clutch?

If you watch 70s or later US films you will see a car stop then lurch when they start to get out of the car.
That is because yanks are lazy and only use P for the brake. They think a hand brake is only an Emergency Brake!
The lurch is because when you take your foot off the brake pedal there is a lot of slack in the P gearbox latch (cmade worse by doing this in the first place) that has to be taken up. Eventually the ratchet pawl in the gearbox will wear out and the car will roll off in to the sunset fith a RRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR sound. Series 1 V8

My Friend put hers in park but the paw didnt latch and the car started to move and was soon going too fast for it to latch.
The car made it to the bottom of the hill faster than she did and went through the front window of the pub she worked in.
When interviewed by the police she said she had seen a car drive past similar to hers but the driver didnt brake at all and crashed into the pub I don't know how they kept a straight face.

My advice is to use the park brake as much as possible. It maybe coincidence, but I’ve not had any issues with them in the past 14 years. 2006 D3 HSE (Original & still the best)-GONE
2010 D4 HSE (A bit bling)-GONE
2014 D4 HSE (Almost too bling)-GONE
2015 D4 HSE (A heated what?)-GONE

A lot of older US cars, had the park brake foot operated and on one Jeep , I could only operate it with the door open as I couldn't lift my leg far enough to operate the pedal with the door closed.

Someone on here suggested the "Use it or lose it" approach.
To this end I use both my EPB and Access height every journey. I have only once had the EPB red light on and I adjusted the shoes the next day with no further issues.
Having just said that it will probaly fail now!!! Series 1 V8

For short periods it will be fine such as waiting at a junctionor to pull onto a roundabout. If waiting at lights you know the sequence is quite long then put into neutral. De-Tango

Now they say it does less damage leaving it in D
