having just had a new drive installed, the D4 has decided to start "dripping rust" for want of a better description. a quick look underneath and it's looking like the **** sidesteps are the culprit, looking very naff underneath.
1. are they going to come off easily ?
2. what have folks found regarding success rate of refurb'ing them ?
3. is it going to be simpler to buy another set ?.

They are only made of thin metal so i would say if they were dropping enough rust to be noticeable that they are probably shot and the only safe way to refurb them is by replacing them. Previous Discos

Had some OEM ones on my first D3 they fell apart when I took them off. I'd take them off and see what's what.
If they are shot PM me, I have some 3 year old OEMs just taken off my D4 that I'm about to put up for sale. Slight ding in the silver strip on one side which is replaceable maybe even with the one from your Current set MY06 S - Gone but not forgotten

get underneath this weekend and squirt the bolts holding the running boards on with wd40 they will be rusted up and the captive nut will shear and spin very easy If they are stuck.. If that happens you can get the whole thing off in one piece but you have to mess about undoing the main bolts without removing the trim which is a right pain In the back side MY06 S - Gone but not forgotten

If the step to mounting brackets don't come off, you'll need to cut the top rubber section off and cut or drill the bolts out.
If the mounting brackets are ok, best leave them, and clean and paint them. They were the same as my aftermarket steps when I changed mine, so just re used them.
It's worth spraying with Waxoyl once fitted. Coat the underneath liberally as they take the brunt of the spray from the front wheels.2011 MY D4 HSE

brief look under to get some WD40 on them and they look ... brackets look poor too but may be ok when i detach the steps and can see properly.
problem will be if i take them off, decide they need binning then can't get them back on whilst i get replacements. probably not wise (even if legit) to be driving round with 3 brackets per side sticking out to catch the unwary.

I’ve just taken mine off as I didn’t like them. Little bit of surface rust to them, but structurally sound. Could do with a rub down underneath and sealing/painting. If you’re interested in them drop me a pm and I’ll send some pics.
