With 4 off-road Forum Events on the calendar over the next 8 or so weekends, I want to temporarily remove my factory fitted Side Tubes (and their brackets I guess).
Won't get a chance to look at how they're fitted until this afternoon so, if anyone's removed these recently, an indication of what's involved would be appreciated. Do I need a 2nd pair of hands or any non basic tools?

Try this link to Land Rover Owner Info.
You should be able to find the fitting instructions, unfortunately I can't download on this PC but you can select the documents you need and download to print in pdf format

My experience is that you can easily remove the tamper proof protection and take them out using a simple Torx tool. 10-15" job. You are right to take them out, mine were completely destroyed during y first 4X4 outing with this Disco.
A quite useless option to my mind. A second D3 ! This time with all whistles and bells (Auto, 7seats, Diff Lock, RAI, all kinds of protections, winch, Extended range tank, iPod adapter....)
First time twice the same car ! and first time third car of the same brand !
I'm loving it !

You should have an Allen key that came with the tubes. its got a small hole in the middle to fit over the "pin" in the Allen bolt. The tubes would have been fitted by the dealer. my key was left in the glove box
if not you can either borrow mine or drill a small hole in a normal allen key, cant remember the size though, may be 8mm Duncan

Hi Dunc
Regrettably, the dealer didn't leave me with anything.
Can I either take you up on the offer of borrowing your 'side tube' pin hex key or perhaps you could measure it so that I can source one from a local tool shop?
In any event, I really need to take the tubes off before I get to Bala next weekend as I don't want them rattling about in the back whilst we're on the LRE course!!

On my dealer fitted tubes only one bolt on each side was tamper proof.
Needless to say it was a Sunday and I had every tamper proof hex key except the correct size for the job!
I used a small punch and a club hammer to knock the pin to one side and then to flatten it into the bottom of the socket hole.
Better to get the correct bit if you can!
Its almost imposable to drill a good quality hex bit BTW .

You should never argue with idiots because they will just drag you down to their level....then beat you with experience !

Just checked and mine also only has one of the hex pin types each side. I reckon the hex size is 8mm

If they were sidesteps, yes the grinder would have been out before now but I like my stainless tubes. I got the dealer to fund and fit them for me when I bought my used motor.

Taken in the spirit it was meant!!
I also respect the views of those that hate them and I would be the first to admit that they're totally impractical for offroading!
