Side Steps or Side Protection Tubes |
|
I'm picking up my new D4 XS in a few weeks and am now thinking about the practicalities of it for two small kids (2 and 4yrs). Specifically I'm thinking they won't be able to climb in too easily and so do I need a side step?Problem is the LR side step is a bit shiny for my tastes.
So my questions is, would the side protection bars work reasonably well as a side step? Or are they too close to the car to allow a small child's foot to get an purchase?
Also, does anyone know if the D3 interior accessories (specifically the dog-guard, rubber load space protector and mats) fit the D4? I assume some of you who have swapped from D3 to D4 may have tried to fit these in their new cars.
Many thanks
Mike

Hello and Welcome.
We have similar age kids and I purchased tubes. If I was doing again I would get the steps.
They can't step on the tube so you always have to lift them in. Thats my opinion.

pretty sure a recently deceased forum sponsor firm could put step pads on their tubes if you requested it. so might be worth having a look around for them! 2014 D4 XS

We have had the D3 since the kids were 3 years-old and new born. We have never had side steps and never missed them. The kids are now 6.5 and 3.5 and both can climb into the D3 without assistance. However, we have fitted RLD rock sliders, which are very good indeed.
The downside of steps is that adults rub their trousers on the dirty steps when they step out of the car. I think one of the things that LR got spot-on was a design that gives a clear entry to all occupants, with no lower-leg obstructions. Seems a shame to change that, even if it is a LR-approved accessory.

In my search for steps for my d3 I came across some a couple types of sport bars, one has a rubber strip for extra grip and I've seen some with a recess for your feet with what looks like an antislip tread from a company in derby, slimer, one of the forum users has some steps available for a good price which might be a better for you ?

Have a look on fleabay, there are 75mm s/steel side tubes being sold new for around £250 which have integrated plastic steps.
I bought them and can recommend them. Brackets allow for a a bit of lateral movement so you can bring them out from the car by a bit to allow you to get a good foot hold. My only gripe would be the thin paint finish on the mounting brackets, but i dealt with this myself before fitting.
Other than the above they are a good product and very good valve!!

Hi
AFAIK the boot protector & dog guard are the same in D3 & D4
I think the floor mats are different. However, I believe some folks have managed to transfer them over.
I've gone for the sidesteps on mine as it makes access easier for the less nimble (elderly parents etc) They also allow me to reach the roof for cleaning and get my stuff out of the roof box without having to either stand on the seats or carry some steps.
If you're in the market for side steps then Slimer's "Group Buy" is almost half list price

When I bought my D4 here in Oz back in December LR had not released rubber floor mats for it yet. My dealer fitted a set of D3 mats for me, and as far as i am concerned they have gone in just fine. From memory they had to install a locating stud in the floor carpet, but this was no hassle.
I chose not to go with steps (shin bangers) but do use access height a fair bit, esp when loading my 80+ mother or my (teenage) kids with full and weighty school backpacks.

Many thanks. SWMBO took a look over a friends D3 with side-steps and is convinced only the steps will do. Looks like I will be ordering some once the car arrived (2 1/2 weeks and counting).
