Side step replacement

The time has come to replace my ‘tatty’ OE sidesteps. The outrigger brackets ( from chassis to step) are all in very good condition, it’s just the step and aluminium strips that are corroded and flakey. Has anyone managed to buy from eBay, steps that fit directly onto the existing outriggers and, if so, any links to the models purchased.......they all APPEAR to be very similar but much cheaper than LR replacements! TIA
 Best Regards,
Dave.

I set out to do the same as you a few years ago.

I bought steps that appeared identical to the existing ones, which were also sourced from ebay but found that when fitted to the existing brackets they were too high and the doors wouldn't open. I found this out before bolting the steps on luckily, they looked wrong.

The thickness of the step was different to the exisitng one and the new brackets were corespondingly shorter (or something like that) so I had to remove the brackets and fit the new ones.

I guess it's a lottery and you may get ones that fit or you may end up having to change the brackets as well, which isn't fun as the bolts sheer!

Don't know if mine were original ones -think they were.

Brit part one fitted onto the existing brackets just fine.

I would paint/seal the undersides/brackets prior to final install. We have tar based products down here which work well.

Even though I undersealed the underside of the steps and the brackets the problem is the rivets that hold the aluminium trim in place.

They just corrode away within 2 years and the trim falls off.

many of the copies are literally that … they buy a set of OEM steps and get someone in China to copy them by the container load.

so most will do what you want.

Well, got the nearside step off okay, which was the most tatty looking, underside wasn’t too bad, so cleaned up and resprayed the aluminium strip and it di£not look too bad.

The off side was one a completely different story - outside looked good but all step fixing bolts either snapped off or the bolt heads just spun in their captive recesses! The undersides are almost completely rusted away although the outrigger brackets appear to be good.

New side steps on their way from JGS4x4! Doh!
 Best Regards,
Dave.
