Very fair Prof..... spending £1500 on a winch setup which might be used a few times a year doesn't make sense at all..... but don't tell SWMBO I said that.
It only makes sense when you actually need it , it’s a piece of equipment you need to be able to rely on and the cheap Chinese ones fail regularly, I’ve seen one snap in half.
Even the warn winches fitted by LR are under spec for the weight of the Disco, although are a cracking winch for serious off-road in a 90

LR Warn 9.5xp is 9500lbs or 4300kgs. I wouldn’t have said under spec Whistle More than enough if you throw a snatch block into the mix also.

Winch Mount

I have had a tray off ‘Uncle Ray’ a well made sturdy bit of kit. Proper clean welds with the splatter all removed and good things like that. Also the powder coating is a thorough job and looks like it will last, (unlike my commercially bought Disco 2 tray)

I havent got round to fitting it yet partly due to other jobs needing to be done but mainly it took me a while to get my mind around the wiring and where to make the connections to the battery. I have this in my head now so am feelimg confident.

I have a SuperWinch Tigershark to install. 9500lb version with the rope rather than wire. It is rated the same as the Land Rover winches and this one has been ultra reliable. By that I mean I dont use it much but when I have needed it it works! After 3 years sitting on the D2 it came out with a corroded winch motor body, this cleaned up and had a coat of hammerrite. All other parts cleaned with a rag and soap.

I have a block to double the pull if needs be so 9500lb should be plenty.

Warn come has 9500lb pull, Discovery fully loaded weighs in at 3.5 ton or 7260lb,
So not allowing for any suction or resistance from obstacles the winch is working at close to max capacity with just the weight of the vehicle. You can use snatch blocks to lighten load , but most winches hold around 30metre wire or rope, snatch block reduces length of line pull to 15metre, and you only get the 9500lb pull on the last coil of the winch drum.

Stuck

But of course I dont have a winch to pull myself out. I have a winch to pull out the other cars! Best not to get stuck then from your calculations. 👍

Winch info

Wow that was very informative info from that winching link. To be fair I had some training off my friend who is a professional vehicle recovery operator. He touched on a lot of the safety items and watch outs. Seeing it wrote down is a very useful recap and does make you reflect about what you have done in the past.

You’re not winching yourself vertical so those figures are irrelevant really. You could push a D4 on your own on the flat and in neutral so what poundage does that equate to?
FWIW Special Vehicles fitted warm 9.5XP to the last lot of G4s so surely that tells you something?

Regarding winch power and pushing a D4 on the flat manually, yes you can push it in neutral but try it with just a 25mm step and your struggling. Also on 45 degree slope winching weight doubles!
Plus for safety margins it’s recommended to have a winch of 1.5 vehicle weight, which would be 10890lb, and most serious self recovery people prefer 2x vehicle weight which is 1520, which incidentally is why I fitted the TDS 12000lb with the upgraded bow motor 2 giving 14400lb of pull.
Ps. Wish I knew how to use quote function lol

Cables

can anyone show a picture of how they connected the earth wire to the car. I am thinking I need to bolt it to the battery to body earth point on the nearside inner wing. Thanks

I think all winch manufacturers state connecting earth directly to Neg.Battery - best practice Thumbs Up
