Well at 106k my14 plate D4 still does to me exactly the same as the day I bought it, yes I have had a few issues with it but then you do with most cars, but the intercooler went this year and the paint work needs tidying up, so I have looked around driven different models, and this is where I am right now D4 is in the paint shop having the noticeable bits done and then she’s going into the dealership for the intercooler cooler to be replaced, as I tried and failed due to my health, but even if the engine does go there are still choices, oval or the dealership, so calculations done if she costs me £25k worst case scenario what can I buy that I like and the answer is nothing. So good luck with your choice

Went to see a 2016 fully loaded Landmark today. One previous owner, 95k on the clock.
Looked great but when I started getting up close and personal things started to feel odd . Can't put my finger on it but something felt out of place. My gut said walk away.
The other thing that suprised me was that it didnt excite me.
Maybe a D4 isnt for me?
I've got a couple of others to view,so we'll see, but driving two hours back in the Defender in Biblical rain was a good place to be and gave me time to think. D4 HSE EU6 (Known as Jeeves)

I think it does largely come down to luck, given the number of D4's sold the % that suffer crank failure seems very small.
Ive just got a 17 plate Disco Sport with the ingeniboom engine which so far is running fine at 80k miles, but my view now is the same as with the crankshafts. The % of failures compared to numbers of JLR cars sold with the same engine is low (all be it higher in numbers that the D4 possibly)
That formula doesn’t apply to the ingeniboom engine, from what I’ve read they will go BOOM before 100k miles guaranteed, never heard of one reaching 100k, yours maybe on its 3 engine! don’t push your luck get the timing chain changed at least or better still get rid, if the timing chain doesn’t snap the turbo will explode and right the engine off, £8k for a replacement engine, I am talking about the 2ltr version 3ltr seems slightly better.

I 100% get your point but saying its guaranteed to go boom before 100k is a bit misleading. Social Media is a bit like forums (probably worse to be fair to forums) in that people generally only post about things going wrong, but very few post about things going right.
Yes its a risk, but then its a risk buying a Ford Fiesta(most stolen car 2 years in a row) or buying a BMW with the 2.0D engine that also has timing chain issues but requires engine out to change it. Or buying a D4 with the risk of a snapped crank.2011 D4 XS 305 MY12 - gone but not forgotten

Thoughts of a D4 Newbie...
Now in month six of D4 ownership and really liking it. Had Freelander 2's - TD4 and an SD4 for the preceding 18 years (Only issue - in over 150k miles, a failed injector on the TD4).
When I mentioned making the change to the Service Manager at my local Indie, they said 'you're swapping the most reliable LR product ever made - for the second most'!
15 plate HSE Lux with 70k miles, FSH etc. Had them replace the front suspension arms, timing belts and centre prop shaft coupling. Inlet manifold looked sound. Replaced oil midway between services with 5w 40 Helix Ultra.
Just back from 5 days fishing on the Wye in deepest, wet, muddy Herefordshire. 4 anglers plus kit - and it performed beautifully. 30-35mpg on a run.
Pro's as compared to SD4 FL2: Lovely ride, very smooth and quiet on-road - so can hear the belting Meridian HIFi system. Lovely V6 sound under 'welly'.
Con's: Much higher servicing and maintenance costs, lower mpg in runaround driving. Insurance up £200 pa. £1.5k quote for the nest, 10-year full service!!
I only average 5k miles pa and just want to enjoy them, damn the expense!
The D4 is a brilliantly capable car - and a cave-on-wheels. Tows beautifully and is a near-limo on-road (when it's been cleaned)!
Make the most of driving while you can, before our new, 'water-melon' Government kills off any fun.

When I finally threw in the towel for getting my D3 restored and brought home.
Getting a D4 was the logical choice but one I debated quite a bit over.
The issues of snapped cranks and the cost to get an engine sorted was my biggest fear.
Otherwise a D4 is just a D3 with some faults fixed, some new ones added and loads that are the same.
I got a 66 plate landmark with superb history and it’s likely a final batch car as the build plate says 16th July. 3k in and it’s a lovely car and I’m enjoying being back in a Disco.
I got over the crank by looking at how many of my friends had a D3 and did big mileages without issue.
My own getting 203,936 miles before getting scrapped. The engine is going to live on in another D3.
Then how many moved onto a D4 and again did big mileages without engine failure.
Only 1 friend had a D4 crank failure at 100kish, but thanks to a full dealer history it got a new engine with JLR paying 100%.In loving memory of FA54WSK.

I had the same conundrum as you and ended up with a very nice incredibly clean Jap import 5.0 for closer to 20k than 30k! I will post a longer post about it soon but it's the best "car" decision i have ever made, the car is incredible!
Jap import so the underneath is incredibly clean (no rust at all) the engine is just so much smoother and quieter than the deasil. I much prefer having a proper gear stick in the 6 speed to the rotory dial in the 8 speed (i had a L322 8 speed before this) obviously 375bhp is nicer than 250 lol!
the engine is a euro 4 petrol so it is ULEZ compliant and the tax is cheaper as it is an import, insurnace for me is also £200 cheaper (don't know why!)
MPG is about 5 mpg worse than my old Disco 3 so probably 8-10 worse than a 2016 disco 4. it does 24 on a run and 20 all around. It is not great in town thou!
things i don't have to worry about include
rust
crank failure
AD blue
EGR valve
DPF
oil dilution
Turbo issues
other dirty deasil related problems lol!
things i have to sorry about....
timing chain but that is a once every 100k miles issue and mine is fine right now
MPG but i use my wifes EV for a lot of short journeys to keep the miles off of it
final thing is that depreciation should be less as these are so rare and i do think they will become collectable as the disco 4 shape is just a classic and combine that with a 5.0 V8 really is quite a combo!
pm me if you want any more info. I was this close to buying a euro 6 deasil then i test drove a V8!

It's actually to do with age, the youngest is 12 years old, the gearbox - its 6 speed and to some extent the difference in cost. I can get a very nice low mileage HSE Lux with full history for under £20k where as a Jap V8 is nearly £30k. Even if I need a new engine I'm still there or thee about.
