Many Insurers would add you car back on as a temporary vehicle for around £25 per week but if its an "on line" organisation you often find the charges are very high.
Whats the "silly money" your Insurer wanted.
The old car is now a "second or extra vehicle" and as such would not be automatically entitled to the no claims discount which of course is now on the permanent car.
As an alternative try http://www.dayinsure.com/ which is underwitten by Aviva or https://www.tempcover.com/Short-term-car-insurance.aspx offered by Provident Insurance

Is that £20 insurance and £50 fee ?
Some Insurers/Brokers will cut the initial cost of the original policy to the minimum, and make up the income from charges. The charges would be shown in the original documents but are often overlooked by the applicant in favour of cheap (cheaper) premium.
Which Insurer is wanting that much? - must say have never come across one as much as that before. Unless of course your own circumstances are such that you are paying £200 or £300 per month already.

mal_NW - What happened to the post you put on here which mentioned £70 ?? -- it seems to have dissapeared -- or did I imagine I saw that last night !!
£45 not too bad - but have they told you why they wanted £70 first time around?
