SHORT BURST OF WORRYING NOISE ON COLD START

Here we go again - just whenI thought things were going OK.My Disco has just done 30,000 and on cold start up has just started to make a horrible deep rumbling noise - like a sudden burst of a loud coffee grinder! No starting problems and not the roaring you get when vehicle pulls away. No other symptoms and nothing registering as a fault. It goes after a few seconds. Anyone else had this? Crying or Very sad

Mine has always made some horrible mechanical noises immediately after a cold start up. They go as you say after a few seconds.

Its the Viscus Fan. Its takes about 26.8 seconds to sort its self out when cold.
In the Beginning there was nothing, which exploded.

It has never done it until the last couple of days. It does sound serious. Sound like a starter motor fault type noise or motor/compressor going wrong! It is pretty loud.

that is the roaring noise AndrewS, i think 3rdTL is referring to something else that is quite different. Yours might not do it as it is a newer model. It does sound like it is running on a bag of nails for 2 or three seconds on start up

Yep - that sounds more like my train of thought - so difficult to describe a sound. Will try and search for Wiggs and the same sort of problem.

Sorry miss read your post.
I have had various issues with noises from the front of the car. Start it up and stick your head inside the NS wheel arch. If the noise is more apparent from this area it could be the AC compressor. Or it may be one of the pully bearings on it way out. Take it to a dealer and get the stethoscope booted up.

AAGGGHHH - IT'S COMING FROM THE BACK - COMPRESSOR AGAIN?

Managed to leap out of car while it was making horrible noise and realised it sounded uncannily like a very noisy compressor! Tiptoed around the back and unfortunately it is coming from around the NS rear while arch - nasty feeling we need a new comrpessor AGAIN. Raised vehicle and lowered back to normal height and it got worse - suspicion confirmed I think. Big Cry
