Shark fin grommet leak

You'd think by the end of production JLR would have all the little niggles fixed, but no, got a leak through the grommet. Does anyone know or have a photo of this grommet before I try and fix the leak. Get the impression its stuck down with tape rather than the usuaul way grommets seal? Going on another post, the screws holding down the outer can rust, the rear cover isn't that secure despite the screws being tight. Only one cable coming through, is this correct, I'll see when I strip it down. Leak is on the left.

Quick update on this, screws are turning ok, but they're not coming up and out of the rear housing, lifting the rear housing instead which in turn lifted the front one a little, surprised I couldn't remove the screws. Don't want to force anything and make it worse.

Hi, the base is bonded to the glass and the screws / nuts are probably rusted and turning in the base plastic.

It’s also a 5 pin security torx if I remember correctly

I had a similar issue and replaced the base plastic, fitting it with Sikaflex as LR don’t do a separate seal (it comes already bonded to the glass)

Be careful taking it apart. I managed to break the cable but have a battery soldering iron so it was easy to repair.

I would guess if you use sikaflex or similar on the base (which was leaking on mine) you should solve the issue. You could always add some into the grommet hole if your concerned.

They're not turning in the base from what I can see, tighten back down again. Was worried about the the base moving, still on the glass. Can't believe its not available with the tape, expect it to be on a new base.

Thanks, saw that a few days back, bookmarked it, studied the photo's, how does the rear cover come off, just lift off after removing the screws, mine won't come out, wondering if its been off before and someone has used silicon or whatever to attach rear cover to grommet and thats why its lifting the front cover, if thats the case, bigger leak now, front cover slide forward and off?

Mine came off fairly easily after removing the bolts.

It may slide backwards to release, I can't remember.

If I get chance, I'll have a look later on today or early tomorrow.

Just an observation, mine leaks too, waiting for it to warm up before I tackle.

The bracket as it is called is stuck on with tape rather than bonded on so that it can be knocked off.

If you bond it on, then catch something with it, it will not be knocked off, but will likely break the glass roof.

I have heard that the car entry point at the euro tunnel is low enough!

I will be removing mine and attaching with double sided foam tape, after sealing the grommet and cable.

Finally got round to this.....

It was the insert that was screwing out and not the screw, it was rusted solid in the insert.

Decided to drill out the screw, before drilling ensure the screw is tightened back up, gently drill off the head, too hard and the insert may turn in the plastic housing, makes it harder to remove! Thought it was as simple as drilling off the head, but the rear cover doesn't lift straight up and off, there are 2 lugs that locate under the front cover which means you have to lift it from the back, because part of the screw is still in the locating hole it won't come off, either drill the screw out further or use a screwdriver or silmilar to gently lift the cover over the screw, lift it up from the back, rear cover removed!

You'll be left with part of the screw sticking up through the front cover, cut it down, then using a screwdriver or similar gently lift the cover up, once its's over the screw push the cover forward to release it from the base.





You'll be left with part of the screw and insert in the base, use vice grips to unscrew the insert from the base.

New and old inserts



I bought new brass inserts M5x8mm, they are slightly longer than the original insert, filed them down to size and fitted them into the hole in the base, they're self threading.



Middle insert is the full length. The screw with the 2 nuts was my method of screwing in the insert, the washer ensures the insert is flush with the top of the base, once in position unlock the 2 nuts and remove the screw.







Used some silicon to hopefully stop the leak, the reason for removing the cover in the first place!

Used silver anti seize on the screws and fitted everything back together, hasn't rained so no idea if the leaks fixed...






Hope this helps someone to remove the covers without breaking the base, cover the sunroof when you're drilling, collects the swarf and be carefull with laying down tools on the sunroof, maybe a board for the tools, too easy to forget its a glass sunroof and break it!
