Set up Required to tow a Sankey Trailer?

Hello,

I want to get a medium sized trailer to fill with the family camping kit and leave ready for those fleeting dry weekends. Having owned an egg cup on wheels which I attempted to tow behind my Defender CSW I appreciate that larger is better, and it seems that a decent nick Sankey wide track would be a budget way of getting the capacity I'd like.

OK, here's the question . . . what is the best set up for my non-tow-packed Discovery to enable towing a sankey? I need a nato hitch, but is there a way of avoiding the swan neck detachable tow bar thing and bolting straight onto the rear of the car - as a sankey would not need a drop plate or any lowering of the hitch, being already sized for a land rover.

This forum provides info on adding the electrics, and I understand that I need to take the completed job to land rover so that they can reprogram the suspension, but I've not seen anything on getting the hitch on the car.

I'm getting old so I may have missed this elsewhere in the forum, in which case any help or redirection would be welcomed.

Thank you,

Matt

Think you will need a multi height towbar TBH

Take a look at the pictures in this thread Thumbs Up

You could also bolt the drop plate / Nato hook onto one of these which would raise it abit further, but I dont think these are EU approved yet.

thank you all for your help . . .

. . . and for the warm welcome to the forum.

I've nothing against ifor williams gear - my brother in law is a farmer and swears by their products. They just seem pricey compared to the cost of a sankey. A family friend has a 3/4 tonne sankey he tows behind his 90 for light farming duties, and only payed a few hundred for it (that said adding a nato hitch to the RCM of a 90 is a lot simpler.)

DiscoDunc, the drop plate you've added looks good . . . where can I get more info on it?

Again, thanks all, and if you see a black disco in and around the Chew Valley give us a flash (did this all the time when driving the 110.)

Don't forget to visit the site shop, you will need a rear window sticker so we know your are 'one of us' when you are seen out and about, purchases also help pay the costs of keeping the site running, and a few stickers will cost less than a couple of starbucks coffees Thumbs Up

Gents , forgive my ignorance here.I occasionally used to tow compressors and other plant about. Most of these had a ring type hitch as per the sankey. All I used was a ball type hitch with a spring loaded pin that slotted down through the centre of the ball and into a receiver below the ball.I can't remember the diameter of the ring type hitch on the various pieces of plant , but are they not the same as the sankey ?

I think using the "pin" is illegal with a NATO hitch. Not 100% sure though. The nato hook holds the hitch tight whereas the pin doesnt.

Matt, I got all the bits from APB Trading. The bracket you see in the picture above is from South Africa but not eu approved for towing. I bought it to fit a rear winch tray so it didnt matter.

The other bits, drop plate etc you can get from most towbar places that sells Defender towbars etc

Ah , IC , so I presume the thickness of the NATO hitch would be greater than that of a standard ring type hitch.

Cheers Thumbs Up

Nato ring is 76mm internal Diameter, the pins you talk of are about 50mm diameter ISTR.

You 'Can' tow Nato with a 5T pin, but personally I wouldnt recommend it, especially as it woudl clonk about all over the place!

@Duncan, does your setup have the sankey front too far nose down?
