Don't drive it! If the crank let's go you'll need a now engine as it will likely warp the block.

Get it transported to the garage and have it assessed.

thks but if the crank goes surely it would not run at all. i have no engine warning lights or fluid leakage, is it possible the LR garage didnt install one of the new injectors correctly?

If what you are hearing is a crank bearing and you continue drive it you risk destruction of the engine.

Could it be an injector? Yes, but it might not be and I can't tell from the limited vid you posted.

so hopefully its the injector but if not I guess its a new short block LR038168 and engine rebuild, how many hours does this take 15 or so ?

Hopefully at worst it will be a big end bearing that has gone and you won't need a new block.

Crank re-grind and new main & big end bearings, gaskets & seals, and a new oil pump T/belt etc as a bare minimum. The cost will depend on the hourly rate being charged, but if the cost of your replacement manifolds is anything to go by it's going to hurt.

Try and get a fixed price for the work and a list of what components they intend to replace. Whatever they come back with it's a lot to shell out on a 12yr old car especially given you have already spent 5k.

Maybe move it on afterwards and try to recover some or most of the outlay for a newer vehicle?

There is a wide variety of engine remanufacturers out there, some have high standards of workmanship and many others much less so. Either way, success or failure of these engines will very often come down to the quality of the components used during the rebuild, and not just the machining processes. A firm example of this might be the source for the crankshaft if it has to be replaced!

There are some specialist Land Rover engine rebuilders who do nothing else but Land Rover. These guys you'd expect to hold a high degree of knowledge with these engines, their respective failure points, idiosyncrasies, and what components not to use in a rebuild etc.

However, there are long held question marks regarding the origin of manufacture for crankshaft replacements used during the remanufacture process. Whether it be by Land Rover, or an aftermarket specialist, these can be sourced from a number of manufacturers based in either India, Turkey, Europe, or elsewhere. All of which will have varying standards of quality, and so it would appear (anecdotally at least) that the failure or otherwise will heavily depend on which of these sources were used for the crank replacement.

So which is the best crank? For the most part I can again only find anecdotal evidence but it would seem to point to the European manufactured cranks supplied by DEX as being the most reliable.

As for a specialist rebuilder Oval Auto's in the UK seem to be highly thought of on here, and although I have no personal dealings with them they are perhaps worth having a chat with before you decide further on what route to take. Thumbs Up
