elusive MOST fault - new ideas needed

Hi All,

Been trying to find something similar on forum but cant see anything like what I am experiencing.

On start up the screen display goes to normal home screen in normal time frame but the stereo, NAV and phone(Bluetooth) hangs and doesn't initialise for a varying amount of time. Sometimes it loads straight away as normal, sometimes takes 30 secs, other times it can be 5 mins other times 20 mins and other times just doesn't load through a whole journey. This also effects parking sensors but camera works.

It feels like an ECU is hanging - like a computer not booting up properly.

There are no fault codes on the IID.

I haven't tried a hard reset yet but that will be next move unless anyone has a better idea?

Anyone heard of this before?

I have a D3 and have a similar problem with the centre screen/sat nav screen. On starting the car, sometimes it will freeze and can take several minutes to reload and, when it does, it resets everything. No codes on IID also. Not noticed anything with the parking sensors (but I don't think these are linking into that system on a D3).

It turned out to be the sat nav CD unit under the passenger seat. For whatever reason, it sometimes doesn't load properly and stops the whole system. It will eventually get a reset signal, switch off, back on and load fine which is why everything appears to freeze for several minutes whilst waiting for this to happen. Apparently, these are known to become faulty at some point in their lives. The solution is a new sat nav CD unit, which I've not bought yet.

It's definitely worth a hard reset first but, if that doesn't work, try disconnecting the sat nav CD unit (if D4s have them?) and see if it still happens then. Or, next time it hangs, try unplugging and plugging back in the sat nav CD power cable on the back as it also forces a restart.

Update on this. I finally got round to performing a hard reset but alas, problem still exists.

After more reading on forum, I am now thinking next step is to isolate components one by one with a MOST loop.

I have ordered a MOST loop.

BUT.. I don't know where to start after that.. anyone know what locations the individual ECU's/units are? any particular order to this type of diagnostic work? any important steps to adhere to?

I have an IID tool.

Any guidance welcome.

Still struggling here.

I have a most loop.

I have identified amp, DAB, TV module and RSE, can’t find a Bluetooth module.

All modules I have found have the red light have looped them out individually with no change when fault is occurring. when the system is operating it never stops working until power switched off again.(engine running or not). All functions of the individual components work fully when on. Nothing faulty.

I haven’t taken dash apart yet to get to head unit or sat nav.

Does the signal start and finish in the head unit?

If so I’m starting to suspect the head unit is not reading the return signal straight away. But can’t fathom why it does eventually then turn on.

Battery was new in April. I have charged it. I did tell the car it was new via the IID. Stop start is working when conditions are right. Stop start has been working when the MOST system is not.

Anyone got any wisdom they can share?

The Bluetooth I think is in the same unit as the DVD along with the HDD for the Sat nav. as it has the Bluetooth logo on it Smile
Maybe that is broken/has the issue? Looks a pig to get out mind.

Yes, I believe the head unit is combo of DVD, Bluetooth etc..

So far I can only think that this is my issue but I doubt I can be certain until I try a new one.

Still working on this. Yesterday I took the dash apart and checked and swapped the head unit but same issue.

The MOST signal appears to be generated from the sat nav/screen and not the head unit/CD/DVD unit.

The red light is being seen at all connectors and when the MOST loop is put on each connector individually there is no change.

I have both male and female MOST loops and when I put the male one in the back of the satnav (thus bypassing the complete system) the satnav/screen still doesn't change.

The only conclusion I can come to is that the screen/Nav is the faulty item.

Before I go and buy a new screen/nav unit and take dash apart again, does anyone know of any other issue which could cause this? or able to point anything else out that I may be overlooking?

Hi, just wondering if you have got any further with this? Mine is doing almost the same thing. 2015 D4. Mine went a bit quirky some months ago when the battery got low, it came back OK until a couple of weeks ago, now it just keeps rebooting once the phone, nav home screen comes up.

I've tried a hard reset (disc battery, put neg to pos leads together, I disconnected the start/stop battery too), this made no difference. My front & rear sensors are not working either, I think they starred playing up before the unit went faulty, I did bump the rear bumper a while ago, I'm wondering if the rear park sensor fault might be causing the display to not operate properly ...?

Not yet. Still working on it.

I have now changed the screen and head unit but problem is still the same.

the MOST cables are showing the red light at each module, I have looped them out one by one without change.

My screen always comes on, the extra features work, the cameras work and i can navigate round the screen for those functions, Valet and hidden screen works, set up works. its just the audio and phone which are greyed out and un-responsive. I can press on Nav which takes me to next screen but just says initializing. its always the same from initial start/wake up but often it comes on eventually on a journey - sometimes it will come on within 5 mins and other times it can be 30mins+ once it comes on it never goes off until I switch car off.

Parking sensors don't sound when fault is occurring but i'm confident the car thinks they are working at the time. Same story with audio. when i plug ipod/phone into usb then the phone stops sounding through its own speakers but continues to play like it would under normal circumstances. when i press the power button on the head unit controls, the 'audio off' message appears as normal. I can turn the screen on and off from the screen and see the screen saver ok.

I am now thinking that something else other than the modules on the MOST is causing my problem. I don't know what else has the capacity to freeze the audio system other than the modules in the loop.

The one repeating code I get is 'remote control circuit open' which I believe is steering wheel controls. I am able to clear it though and still nothing changes. when the system is working the steering wheel controls work ok, although I think my car has had these replaced before my ownership under warranty.

I am not sure where I am going next with it yet.

Yours is a bit different to mine, I can't get any options to work properly on the display & I've had the reverse sensor display come on while I'm traveling forward! I'm still wondering if mine is related to the sensors. I was checking fuses earlier (crikey some of those are difficult to get at!), but can't find one for the rear/front sensors...

I saw on another discussion that one chap found that power wasn't coming through & found a break in a wire under the right rear door trim...

have you checked for water ingress around the main fuses coming from battery area through bulkhead?

elusive MOST fault - new ideas needed

I'm stuck.

I have changed both the screen and head unit. the fault as described remains. both the replacement items have worked just like the original items.

The fault does seem to be getting worse, i.e. the infotainment doesn't come on at start up ever anymore, it comes on after longer periods now and not shorter ones.

I have tested the modules on the MOST circuit by looping out one by one. there are 6 modules i can see; nav/screen - head unit/dvd - amp - dab - TV module - RSE.

no moisture in fuses.

nothing else on car is effected.

anyone aware of what else could take the MOST loop out? alternator? steering wheel controls? GPS antenna/signal? gateway module?

I don't know what to look at next.
