Scotland trip which route ?
I'm traveling North of the Border next weekend ! Dufftown........... ?
Will have the mother in law in the car as well as the wife, my 7 year old and our dog !
I have looked at the route and cannot decide on the route,
A1, Edinburgh, A9
OR
A1, A66, M6, A9
Start location Doncaster !
I will need a rest from the in laws at frequent intervals and was thinking first stop Penrith services, the cool one with the outdoor shop and the liqourice shop !
Anyway, if its A66 route which other stops are there further North that i can relax and calm down not neccesarily services just a lay by in tranquility ?
thanks in advanceOnly dead fish go with the Flow !

Hi there Good choice hope the weather stays good.
the tourist route is pretty amazing i use it all the time up my way. Assuming though you want to stick with the main routes for ease a quickness Edinburgh to Aberdeen A90 cut off Take the North road A96 to Huntly and cut across to Dufftown there's plenty of stop offs en route and its dual carriageway all the way practically
Guess the A9 is a good option also sometimes can get congested,
If you do want a tourist of beaten track run suggest taking the Breamar route from Perth then over the Lecht and Cairngorms, lots of great little coffee shops and the views are amazing although will take longer
either way enjoy once you past the madness on main towns it can a very relaxing driveWhy does every page of the manual have fingerprints?

Tis a good trip and no matter which route you'll love it. If you find yourself in the Fife Arms Dufftown - my mate runs it - say hello from from me .
PS maybe a distillery tour also? plenty to choose D4 HSE Luxury

I have been driving on hols for decades from London to Glenlivet, which is about 10 miles SW of Dufftown.
I try to always take the A93 from Perth then the short cut on the B976 and then A939 through Tomintoul etc. It is a fair bit shorter and whilst in theory slower than the A9 due to the twists and turns - as dangerdave says - the views are spectacular at any time of the year and it is a fun road to drive ( esp when I had an Audi Quattro ).
For us it is usually quicker than the A9 as there are very few caravans - and the A9 still has long single carriage way stretches where the overtaking cuased bu frustration can be manic.
The only time i avoid the A93 is when the snow gates are shut or it looks likely that they will be. I have had that happen at the Lecht and had to drive the long way round .
Do give it a go some time - you will see loads of motorbikes on it as it is such a great road.

There are roadworks on the A9 just now at Blair Athol.
Was up in Aviemore last weekend and there was only a slight delay.
Up Pitlochry way yesterday, and the A9 was chockers !

Easy to avoid the roadworks at blairatholl. Going north turn off at faskally bridge and take the old road to Blair and come back on at house of bruar Blair Atholl also nice to stop and have lunch at the Atholl arms. Coming back the way just reverse it come off at house of bruar and rejoin south of blar Atholl Just make sure the wife doesn't get into house of bruar with your credit card
And beware the polis have major speed campaign on the a9 just now

Well i,m up here now, In Glenlevit, Drove up the A66, M6, A9 route, traffic was quiet heading North, Speed trap vans all the way up the the A9, managed to evade the House Of Bruar as was pre warned that two teas and toast cost £13
The D3 has been an absolute pleasure to drive all week, plenty on the roads up here, one on the main drag in Dufftown,
I saw a 2013 FFRR is sand colour heading out of Elgin on Sunday, Only dead fish go with the Flow !

Ah - but the parking and toilets are free! As are the dog facilities.A vaccine does not stop you catching a virus, or passing it on, or getting ill from it, really ill. It does reduce the likelyhood of you dying when really, really ill. Stay Alive - KEEP AWAY FROM PEOPLE.
