We’re heading sauff on Sunday and cross their path on the M80. Luckily they are on a B road. Note they’re closing the new Forth Bridge to traffic, not having the Lycra lot go over the old one! Rolling Eyes

Shucks, that mention of the Lockerbie tragedy brings it back. I had married in autumn 1988, we drove north to Scotland for Christmas. The M74 at Lockerbie was reduced to the west-side lane only, there was a blackened mess at the edge of the town and still the kerosene jet-fuel smell as when near an airport.
We knew a farming family in Scottish Borders, some farmers as far as 20 miles away had been finding bits of wreckage and worse.
Years later I recall the outrage in USA when Scotland's justice minister announced that al-Megrahi would be released from prison upon diagnosis of a terminal illness.
I read about a guy had watched a jumbo heading north over Milton Keynes at dusk on 21/12/88, he realised later it must have been the Pan-Am flight carrying the bomb. In later years I lived in M.K. and sure enough on some days several of those huge jets would head north climbing over us on their great-circle routes to USA and Canada. Mostly smaller twin-jets these days I guess.
There's now an industrial site close to the M74 at Lockerbie with a very tall flue-stack, can see it many miles away. The plume atop the flue column is always pure white, I always think of it as a monument and tribute to the bombing victims and their families.

bdc6570- please update us as to how you get on once back. Best bits, things not to miss etc.

I'm thinking myself about a tour around the far north in 2024. I'll deffo be leaving the caravan at home this time though. thinking of hiring a van conversion for part of the holiday, possibly 14 days.
I know there are lots of people on here with great knowledge of the area and there are lots of posts to read from members who have travelled the routes previously.

Ive already pmd NC500 to seek his advice.

Early days but the planning is all part of the journey. Nothing compared to DSL though who I note is once again off on one of his adventures. I do like reading his posts and seeing his photos inc the "odd" food one!

If ever anyone needs any truthful information about the NC500 and not the BS often posted on social media and forums, just ask me!

I live on it and drive it every week between March and October.
