Are we really to believe that a 1.3 tonne Prius is safer in an accident than a 2.5 tonne Disco 5?! I'm sure if you plant it into a tree that may be the case but in almost all other cases it must be better being in such a heavy vehicle?

Pedestrian safety is included in the overall rating. Possibly that's what marks the D5 down.

In the real world of smashing into other vehicles, street furniture, walls etc. I reckon the interior of the D4 is still a good place to be. Not so if you're a pedestrian hit by one though.

It will no doubt include pedestrian safety. D5 is a big old bus at the front - I don't know if it has active pedestrian safety features, which would help it.

Another pointless article. The Kia Niro gets a better score than the D5 (and the Tiguan which is pretty much right up there in the safety stakes). The Kia requires an optional safety pack to be added to get from 4 stars to 5 stars.

So an inherently safe car is less safe than an optionally safe car? Right, ok.

The Land Rover Discovery scored highly enough to merit a five-star rating, but not without problems. In the frontal offset test, the driver airbag bottomed out owing to insufficient pressure and, in the side barrier test, the driver’s door became unlatched.

Euro NCAP’s Secretary General, Michiel van Ratingen, said, “Jaguar Land Rover has an ambitious programme of new model releases in the coming years. We hope that this challenging schedule and tight development times do not compromise the safety of the vehicles offered, and we hope that they will take our findings onboard”.

For some reason the D5 doesn't feature the pedestrian airbag as fitted to the DS, I thought I would be standard role out across the range.

I'll take my chances in the D5 when it comes to a collision.
