Safari Snorkels really do suck! |
|
Whilst at Ents bonanza, had a chat with Steve Smith and a good look over his Safari Snorkel installment.
Wow, it really does suck!
Just on tickover you can feel the induction.
Blip the throttle and it's like a Dyson vacum cleaner.
I tried same test with my LR RAI and couldn't feel a thing!
Surely more air is better, so why do LR RAI's not suck like Safari Snorkels???
[is it to do with all the holes in the elbows?] I was a normal heterosexual chap, but in these new woke awakenings I now identify as a Wardrobe.

Maybe the extra suck is because the Safari restricts the intake so it has the suck hard to get enough air in?
Strangely my first D3 had a very pronounced suck from the RAI but the current one doesn't, first one didn't have the pipe running through the wing either The End

Is the safari unit not sealed to the air box inlet?...i know they are on the Defenders?
If its sealed then the sucking effect would be more pronounced? "you cannot teach stupid people to do clever things"

He anwered it in the brackets [ Is it because ......]
I could have been more longwinded " Well if you get a straw and suck ..... Now get a straw and pierce some holes pierced in the side and suck ....... Notice the difference ............. "
Anyway what are you doing on here ..............Haven't you got some black smoke to contend with

Have newer versions got an inner tube pipe running through the wing Slimer ?

As it sucks really well.... and it is completely watertight to the engine ....and the intake is forward facing ...what happens to the water that gets sucked \ blown into the intake if you are driving through a torrential rain storm ? 21 year LR veteran > D2 GS 2003 > D3 S 2006 > D3 HSE 2009 > D4 HSE 2013 > D4 HSE 2015 > D5 HSE 2018 > DS HSE R-Dynamic P300e 2021

Good question.
I can't remember but isn't there a drain hole/sump immediately before the main filter housing ?
The same scenario you describe above Rich would apply to the standard wing grille wouldn't it , maybe not so much when moving . But then again the rubber boot isn't sealed to the wing so it wouln't be the same.

Or doing the usual D3 green lane UG ME DRIVE THROUGH WATER ME MAKE BIG SPLASH UG syndrome.
It must have a drain off somewhere
I have been up to my neck in water the LR RAI has never allowed water to get near the filter and I have checked 'lots' of times In the Beginning there was nothing, which exploded.

They 'should' all have a pipe through the wing from the airbox to the wing vent
The facing forward thing is optional, you can face them backwards. Personally I wouldn't fit the Safari facing forward on a RHD D3 because seeing it in the corner of my view all the time would be too annoying The End
