Coincidentally I was just going to ask the same about my nuts - although its only the locking ones which are affected. I dont imagine there's a cure for rusty nuts but wondered more if its a warranty item?
Wheel nut torque is 140 Nm ( +/- 10 Nm ) according to my handbook.

I noticed that my 05 model had very rusty locking wheel nut covers before I picked it up and the dealer very kindly replaced all four with shiny new ones (Lakeland Land Rover)SOLD - 23my Range Rover Sport D300 Dynamic SE
My group coat the locking wheel nut, and the original black ones.
The lockers are made to withstand 720 hour neutral salt spray test which is the typical industrial norm for chassis bolts and fixings components, this according to the fastener standards guys working in the car companies is meant to represent three years average use.
The paint material is a Zinc paint with a lubricant in it to control tightening values when you do the bolts up. and is certainly used on all European vehicles - the Yanks don't bother, have a look at a locker on a J**P and it has a plain uncoated steel band.
The material is water based, need to be kept cold(5oc), and when sprayed has to be cured at 300oc for 1 hour.
The lockers are only fitted in the UK and two other countries, I would ditch them and fit std nuts.
If you want to keep them, buy some Halford's Aluminum paint, which is about a tenth as good but is easy to use, I can supply samples of paint if you come passed Wolverhampton any time.

Rusty wheel nuts
Just wanted to pick this issue up again. The standard wheel nuts on my D3 (the locking ones are not as bad) are getting very rusty. I have cleaned them up but that had encouraged the rust to come even more. New ones are £4ish each and I need 16. Other cars that I have owned (Saab & VW) have had balck plastic caps for the nuts and so overcome the rust problem. The D3 wheel nut size at 22ml is slightly unusual I think.
Does anybody have a solution (or else some non rusty wheel nuts that they want to pass on)?

Rob,
As Shiny Moose says, best to take them off, give a real good clean/brush up, spray with alu/silver paint and add a coat of clear protector to them.

Doesn't the paint get damaged when you tighten the nuts back onto the wheels?

Not really, but ensure you do a proper job and not spray over loose material.
I've done this loads of times over the years and not had any issues.

Thanks I'll give it a go and let you know how I get on.
They are made from cheap soft steel which results in the heads distorting when you tighten them, which in turn damages the paint.

Thanks for the advice, wheel nuts are duly cleaned and painted. Cleaned them off the vehicle then painted with a small brush in situ so no damage until a wheel needs to be removed. Will see how it goes.
