Rust rear wheel arches meet sills

Hello

Looking for some advice on what to do about this rust? Pictures below. It's on both rear wheel arches where the rear arch meets the sill, it's covered up when the doors are closed.

One side is worse and is holed as shown in photos.

Can I just clean it and spray ACF50?

If no, can it be repaired/filled?

If no, is the only option to get the whole thing cut out and reweld a new bit on? (If so I'm assuming that's not cheap Big Cry )

Cheers.

Suggest that you take off sill covers and inner fenders to assess, usually it's worse behind the cover.
Then the only proper repair is to cut out the rusty bits and weld in new. It's not a difficult repair, good access and not too complicated shape of the details. Then repaint and rust proof and it should last some more years.

I think you will find that what rust is showing is only a small section of what is behind the plastic sill cover. It is a common fault in this place for rust.

As posted above you need to dig deeper.

Thanks guys. Was worried it might just be the tip of the iceberg.

Anyone know a good place in Scotland that could look at this for me and do any repair work?

Hi mate

Wonder if one of these finger sanders would help , Got one last year and been brilliant for confined areas

Assume there’s mud etc that’s got behind the inner wheel arch liner

Was it the FL2 wheel arch trim plse that’s used to reduce ingress of dirt etc

Hope ur well my friend

In general, this is not a job where you need a LR expert, any garage who has experience in rust repairs should be able to sort this out, in this respect a Discovery is no different from any other car.

@Flak - cheers, Edinburgh, but can travel for a decent job.

@gstuart - I don't fancy my chances with one of those grinders Laughing is the FL2 wheel arch trim the fix for this reoccurring once I've sorted the rust?

@1784 - sounds encouraging, going to see if I can find a local Edinburgh body shop in the first instance, and drop Disco Mikey a line if I can't find one near me.

DM is based in Dundee and, so far as I am aware, is up to his eyeballs in mechanical work and only does welding as and when necessary. He would be the first to admit that you are best to get bodywork etc done elsewhere

🤣, No probs , is just a variable speed sander so can get different grits

Managed to find the post of the trim, I did wonder if it helps reduce the ingress of dirt , hopefully others can reply if it actually works , wished to share the link just in case it’s useful to u

https://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/rear-wheel-...ander+trim

At least once u get the inner plastic wheel arch out ur be able to see if its spread further and how much dirt etc has been trapped

It will require a good bit of welding. Britpart supplies some panels for the sills, but the arches themselves need to be fabricated.

Engine 710 in South Queensferry might be able to help, either with the work or recommending someone.

Everley Garage, Carnock Rd, Dunfermline KY12 9NX successfully repaired the sills on my S2000 about 3 years ago. They didn't do final paint, but got the cutting & welding done.

Thanks guys for the recommendations, much appreciated.

@gstuart - that looks like a good way to slow the ingress once I've got her looking shipshape again - cheers Thumbs Up
