Update on my comments above -

Apart from the fact that I've just noticed this thread is in the D4 section, I've just been out to my D3 again and noticed that when I turn the ignition on & start the engine, while all the regular courtesy lights go off, the two (fixed rear window) ones that I switched on earlier - stay on.

I'm just thinking about linking these two lights to the main courtesy lights via a diode so that they can be switched ON independently but still come on with the others.

I'll let you know it it works.

Ah right, that was actually Jan this year, full story here -
http://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/topic45191.html

Edit; Sorry, I was looking at the wrong picture, forgot about that one, no problems there, modest bow wave but water down the side was well below the intake.

Anyway, back on topic, looked at the row 3 reading lights again and find that the lamps are fed with 12 volts and switched to ground, the courtesy lights on the other hand are supplied with a switched 12v from a control module with a ground on one side of the lamp, so the diode idea won't work. Rolling Eyes

Now looking at adding a switching transistor to each lamp instead.

Right!

I have just been outside to check what I said earlier and found this...

Unlocked car, all interior lights came on EXCEPT the 2 lights in question. (they were switched off).

Switched them on, (they came on), then locked the car.

ALL lights went out. Although as crwoody mentioned, the 2 in question went out immediately and did not fade, suggesting a separate circuit is involved.

I then unlocked the car again, got in, shut the door and started it. The lights went out EXCEPT the 2 that we are on about!

They had to be switched off.

So, in essence, we are as we were.

If you switch them on, you need to switch them back off again!

Sorry, I've been no help at all! Rolling with laughter Rolling with laughter Rolling with laughter

Checked mine and the are the same as DiscoDads, have to be switched on and off, the only light that works with all the interior lights is the one above the boot/tailgate door.

I've just put an LED bulb in the one by the tailgate and it gives much more light than the standard NAAFI candle that was fitted. Of course it still doesn't make the reading lights come on but it is another option for getting more boot illumination.

DiscoDad and crwoody: thanks for your efforts.

Jamieklb: as colin6307 wrote, LED specifics would be great, thanks.

Just confirming the lights on mine are the same as the recent posts.

I replaced the interior lights and number plate light in my last car with LED bulbs and the effect was really good. Although the disco has rather more lights to replace. With the disco having LED lighting in the lower part of the car (i.e. handles) then I would think it would work well overhead.

The HIDS4U (site sponsor) sidelight bulbs are perfect for the job. The link to his website with the discount code is

Failing that there are plenty of cheaper, but maybe not as bright, alternatives available on a well know online auction site. Just search for w5w smd led. I recently bought some from Hong Kong and they were delivered within a week. I've replaced all the interior lights with LEDs and I've also done the sidelights and number plate lights. Big difference. 8)

Thanks for the link Jamie.

As you have done all the bulbs, did you map what bulb versions are needed for each light? Or are we lucky that its the same bulb type for each one? (my last car had 3 different versions depending on light fitting)

i.e. front, middle, boot, extreme sides & number plate

I can't speak for the D4, but all the interior lights in the D3 are the same type of bulb as the sidelights and the number plate lights. Simples.
