Rough Fuel & Toll Costs to take twin axle caravan to eur
Hi everyone, we are thinking of towing our twin axle caravan to france soon and was just wondering roughly how much were are likely to spend on fuel and road toll costs in an average two week holiday?
Our Disco does roughly 21/22 mpg towing the van which i assume is pretty much the same as anyone else's.
I don't expect am exact figure but if you have a ball park figure it would help us budget for the trip.
Thanks in advance

Hi, we just towed a trailer of 1.6 t from Cumbria. My MPG was 22.5 which ain't bad going considering the hills. Guessing you're MPG won't be far off that really.

We just got back from a trip to Le Manns, large twin axle caravan fully loaded and full of wine etc on way back Five of us in the car and a steady 70 plus MPH returned about 21 MPG which considering the hills on the way was I think OK. Tolls worked out at about £30 each way. I filled up before we left, filled up down there, ran around for two weeks (1/4 tank) filled back up and drove home, filled up on return to Calais 2 1/4 tanks for two weeks great holiday and geat weather cannot be badMY17 D5 1st Edition Namib Orange

Hi, Got back last night from Lake Annecy in the French Alps.
Towing a Bailey Senator 6 twin axle with 4 of us, an inflatable boat and 25hp engine, canoes, extra fridge, roof box, full of booze etc.
Tolls were 122 Euros and 2.5 tanks of fuel to High Wycombe (660 miles) at about 75 mph. Fuel is definitely cheaper out there at an exchange rate of 1.25E/£
Super markets are about 1.39E/l (£1.11/1) and the toll road fuel is about 1.55E/l (£1.24/l)

Brittany Ferries Portsmouth>>Caen, 1400 miles in 2&1/2 weeks, that way no tolls on the other side if you are heading toward the west coast, A84 from Caen to Rennes and then head south
I wasn't towing this time, but from previous experiences, I have seen slightly less economy in the northern parts of France when towing compared to here, I put this down to the road network, they tend to go over hills more that we do, very little cuttings for motorways as you'd expect here, but nice quite cruising and not many hold ups
Fuel as reported 1.39 Euro a litre, but is rising, there is a drive to increase govenment revenue via tax, the fuel went up from 1.34>>1.37>>1.39 in that 2&1/2 weeks

we've just done 2 and 1/2 weeks in France. Fuel costs veried from 1.55 Euros on the motorways, down to 1.35 in the supermarkets. Toll varied - cost 33quid on the run from Paris out to the Vendee (Avrille - near Jard on the coast). On the run back to Cean, most of it (Nantes all the way north) is toll free. Just cost 9 quid from La Roche sur Yon to Nantes.
So Russ - you also chose to ignore the 90kph speed limit for car/trailers wieghing over 3.5T gross train weight I got very bored trying to stick with this limit (although fuel economy was good).

Wow, great replies everyone, thanks very much. You seem to get a very good response on this forum compared to many other forums of different subjects i've been on. Must be that all disco 3 owners like nothing better than talking about them and the adventures they get upto whilst owning them.
So on the same vein, about travelling to France or Europe with the wife, the Disco 3, a twin axle caravan and two dogs, never having done it yet, where should we head for? Where's a great dog friendly area with loads of countryside, lakes, ponds and rivers for a mad springerxborder collie who loves nothing in the world more than water??
Probably not so bothered about the sea side, but open to suggestions??

its fine as it not a fixed installation.
if you fit something like the Gaslow fixed installation (yellow bottles) then they need to have a max 80% fill cut off.
normal caravan propane and butane is fine - its just LPG cars that can fill tanks to 100% that are not allowedDuncan

Cool, I always thought that caravans weren't allowed on the shuttle. Looking better for a trip over there.

good news they still cant go on the shuttle though... is that because they cant be swtich off and isolated then ?
we are off with the twin axle at the end of the month. also using the Sanef Tag so the tolls are free !!! - until they send you the bill the following month Duncan
