Roofbox novice, anything I need to know?

Hi all,

we’re in the market for a Roofbox having never owned one before, it’s time. On the research I’ve done I’ve seen various styles from square(ish) ones to long aerodynamic ones. The larger literage items with an aerodynamic profile; do they actually have usable space because of the tapering nature of the nose area?. Should we look at a more squared item with potential more usable space.

I have looked at gumtree and the locals but found this website https://www.roofbox.co.uk/roof-boxes/ which offers all styles.

https://www.halfords.com/motoring/roof-boxes/

Any advice or experience would be appreciated Thumbs Up

Yes the space at the front is usable, you just tuck smaller softer things at the front in that gap.

I'd go for one with double sided opening as it makes its easier to fill and strap everything up on the Discovery due to the height and width.

We got one with hand tightening clamps rather than nut and bolt U clamps, and one which has a triple lockiking system - basically unless all the lid clasps are locked properly the key to lock the lid won't turn, so you know it's not shut properly.

We got a 500litre thule on from halfords and are very happy with it. It's not too noisy either which is important if you're driving 1000 miles through europe or whatever.

I bought one some years ago (when I had an Evoque - which has no boot space, so essential Smile ) and did a fair bit of shopping around and found Roofbox the cheapest and very helpful with my questions.

A double opening one would be of benefit, but mine isn't and its manageable to load and unload. Its a half width long one, can get a fair amount in there with some careful packing. I went for that, so I still had space for a bike on the other side of the roof bars.

I'm over 6ft but still use a collapsible step to load, then just slide it into the boot for unloading at the other end.

We have a 300 litre Thule one and you can just get a bike rack next to it, if you are not going to carry a bike I would go for the larger full width. You can get a fair bit of stuff in them with careful packing.

When you get one, don’t do what someone here did a while ago. Multistory car parks are off the menu. Whistle

Definitely worth getting one that opens on both sides. I have a late model LR one that does that and has the 'speed fitting' attachments - basically quick-fit clamps. Well worth the extra dosh.
