Roofbox
Hi,
I have a MY12 D4 HSE and in the market for a roof box (3 children and a dog limit how much stuff we can get in the car now).
I've read through some of the historical posts and advice and from what I gather I can still keep with the standard short roof rails that are currently fitted and have roof bars/roof box fitted to that. Is that right?
Are there certain bars/boxes that I should be looking at for this purpose or are there certain dimensions I need to stick within?
We are probably only going to need the box a handful of times a year so I want to keep the hassle and cost to sensible if I can.
Thanks,
Adam

I use an Exodus half-width box on Whispbar bars and the standard short rails. Works fine and you can mount it far enough forward that it doesn't foul the rear tail gate opening. Depends what size box you want and what else you want on the roof - our half-width is big enough for our needs and leaves room for a bike rack on the roof also. I wish I'd bought wider bars though - the aero style of the shorter Whispbar only allows one rack whereas a wider bar would allow two racks next to a half width box.

The standard "short" roof rails are fine. I use the LR cross bars, but only because I got them included in the deal with my first D3. Other makes such as Thule etc. are fine, some even prefer them as they protrude slightly which is handy if you need to secure anything to the bars or as per the post above.
I bought a Halfords branded Exodus box in 2006, knowing that it would only be used a couple of times a year at the most and it was in their sale, which they often are over the winter period. Whilst it's not as well made as the "premium" boxes, it's still going strong.2006 D3 HSE (Original & still the best)-GONE

Thanks for the pointer. That might be suitable (but I would prefer black to match the car ), just have to work out if I can get up there to pick it up (I'm down in Brighton).

Best prices and great service (and advice, if you need it) from http://roofbox.co.uk - not affiliated, but been exceptionally pleased with the things I've bought from there.
Case in point is the Kamei box I bought from them 3 years ago - been used most summers, then sat in garage or outside - still going strong with no worries. Has taken lots of bashing - and I can vouch for their ability to swallow lots of stuff. I have mine on a prospeed roof rack, but other fitting options are available.....

I would also recommend roofbox.co.uk - great service and great price!
Speak to them on the phone and you might get a better deal. That’s what I did.
I bought one of the Kamei boxes and we are chuffed to bits with it.
I would strongly recommend tracking down a set of the genuine LR roof bars as they are unique in how they fit to the roof railings. IMHO worth paying a bit extra as they go on and come off so easy without any tools.

Thanks for the offer farmer chalk but after going to Halfords today and talking to the wife, she we have decided we want a black box to match the colour of the car.
Halfords had the old exodus 470l box on sale in black for £167 so think we will probably get that.
