Roof tents

Questions to clarify.....

Imagin i order a "large" roof tent model... For two adults and two kids (overcamp, overland, eezi awn or other) and my D3 has the LR rails allready mounted.... Normally, tents, have there are 4 anchor points (from the tent to anywhere)

I have two options...

1) Fitting it on two crossing bars (LR or THule)
2) Fitting it on a roof rack ( LR expedition removing the rails or Chris design..or others)

In case (1)...
All our weight (while sleeping) is transmitted to the car by four points...
- ¿Is it a problem?.
- Should be better to add athird or even a fourth bar to distribute the weight?
- Is it needed or not.

In Case (2)
I imagin that the weight is spread in all surface and there are more points of (weight transmision)...
- How many has the expedition rack
- Is there another rack (with LR rails) that have more 2fixing points" to the car.
- I asume that ...more points...better for the car...more weight can support.

- Do you think case (1) is suffitient?
- Do you recomend other Roof rack.
- What would be a "winning" combination... Simply, reliable, "proven"..easy....

Thanks all your comments

Hey Nash,

i have a large roof tent that i am about to get transferred from the old VX80 to the Disco. its on a separate rack and can let you know how it goes...

i have done lots of research because of potential issues with the glass roof cracking etc and recommended rates, but in the end i trust my local supplier to ensure all is in order

Thumbs Up

I have a Howling Moon Tourer Rooftop tent - 65kg of tent plus 35kg for the rack plus 140kg of humans (when sleeping and not on the move Shocked ).

I mount an Australian made custom full length rack (Tradesman Oval) to the 8 mounting points on the D3. No roof rails are used that may help distribute the load across the roof. The tent sits on the back of the rack's welded crossbars and would distribute it's load which included 2 adults and child mainly across the six (3 each side) rear mounting points on the D3 roof. The front 2 mounting points would have a lot less load and really give me extra rack carrying capacity up front. I have carried 40lts of water up the front with the tent on the back. In total this would have been 140kg (which is double the recommend max dynamic load)

I make it a point for the child not to jump up and down in the tent to reduce the impact of sudden loads on these points.

I don't have a sun roof and have not had any problems with load distribution.

If I had to do a low cost options (and easier to install/remove), I would NOT go with a full rack but use heavy duty cross bars plus tracks and use 3 of them to help secure the tent since the tents are very heavy and when 4WD'ing there would be huge load shifts when rocking around so 3 bars would be better than 2 in my opinion.

Hope that helps.

Australia

I've got the same tent as Chris, but I've got it mounted on a frontrunner rack. They have specific rooftop tent mounting brackets available as an option.

I also do not have a sunroof.
 Have a nice day!
