Roof tent...

Does anyone have a solution in order to install a roof tent on the Disco 3 ?

It seems that the roof rack does not allow for more than 54kg ! Seems awfully low...

Or is that simply some precaution from L.R who does'nt want us to live on high ? Wink

Hi,

I'm shure that when you want to put some thing in the center of the roof rack you are allowed to put only 54 kg on it.
But a roof tent is fixed more or less from the right side to the left side of the roof rack.

In the next weeks I will fix my tent on the roof rack.
I think the most big problem is: when you want to open the tent in the axis of the car - I mean you fix th tent more or less in the middle of the roof of the car and to open you flip it to the back of the car - you must pay attention to the door on the back side of the car.

My feeling is, that non LR engineer thought about how to fix and open a roof tent.

When I have my tent on the car I will show some photographies.

Maybe you are right... My only fear is that the roof rails might not be rated for more than less than, say, 100kg... Whereas a roof tent with 2 adults in it might be more than that simple weight... Sad

In my handbook the max. weight on the roof is specified as follows: on road 75 kg, off road 50 kg.
In the pas I drove a Defender 110 TD5 and a Discovery 2 TD5.
On both I had my roof tent and for both you will have not more than 100 kg.
The weight of my roof tent is less than 54 kg.
Typically I dont sleep in my tent when I'm driving.
When the car is parked it's much more weight on the roof allowed.
Be shure it will be not a problem of the weight, it well ore be a problem how to fix the tent on the roof ...

Oh ? You mean that the weight limitation is only when the vehicle is moving ?

I thought that it was that the roof bar could not support more than 54 kgs...

Good if I am wrong... Wink

yes, you are right, it's only for car moving.

But, on my Defender I had a roof rack mad of steel. So it was no problem to step on it.
On my LR3 I have the roofe rack "Expedition", the biggest one. But it's mod of aluminium. So I think they are right with th max 54 kg. But it's only when you b.e. step with your foot on the middle of the rack. With a then it will not be a problem.

Locki is right--the weight limit is for driving only. Check out the roof-top tents at Autohome: http://www.zifer.it/file_gb/overland.html
