Roof storage

Looking for a bit of advice

We are using the car much more for holidays and heading to Southern Germany and Austria next summer so will need additional storage

Like the idea and looks of the expedition style racks. How much noise do these generate with and without luggage? Are roof boxes any more or less noisy?

Borrowed a box a few years ago and found it quite noisy and also difficult getting large heavy boxes in and out of it so again the idea of a rack with ladder seems a better option

Hi Colin.

This one here, a Prospeed Mk1 version, is basically silent even at motorway speeds. Thumbs Up

Also easy to jump pop stuff on it and used straps to tie it all down. I got it for £500 used on ebay.

Thanks. Good to know although hard to find used at the moment. Found a couple of front runner ones though. One is a 3/4 version but not sure if they do a wind deflector kit for that? Also found a G4 one

I ran a Hannibal rack for 15 years across my D3 and D4. Brilliant rack, lovely and flat. Thumbs Up I have a LR rack on my Defender and will soon be changing it for a proper rack. Its a pain to attach anything. Rolling Eyes

I looked at the Prospeed but felt it had too many compromises. Flat and standard works well for me. Thumbs Up

Like the look, and price, of the flat dog one. And they fit for free!

How do you find the road noise of it and did you not fit a wind deflector? Where did you get the ladder?

Thanks

Neat solution!

Is that a prospeed rack? How is the wind noise with that setup with and without roofbox?

Prospeed mk 2 and a Thule XXL box, I also have a 270 batwing too as well as a 5G antenna for in car Wi-Fi ( that’s why the box sits slightly too far forward). I can honestly say you need to be travelling at illegal speeds to hear any wind noise.

Hey colin72blue
road noise Si ok, won’t pretend it’s silent but similar to any of the flat style racks.
The rack has a deflector built in under it, not full height but seems to do the job.

Word of warning on the price, they’re very well priced for a full rack and yes, they fit for free at their factory but you need to take into account the amount you’ll spend on goodies while browsing their shop waiting for the fitting to finish Very Happy

Just browsing the forum as you do and came across your post. I don’t know if you’re sorted however the set up I use might be of interest (if you have a towbar). I have a tent on the roof so I bought a Buzz Rack P10 (c. £170 from the Roof Box Company) which mounts on the towball, and on that is a 190 litre lockable storage box (c. £50 from Amazon). The box takes all of our camping kit and it’s much more accessible than it would be if it were on the roof, also it’s a cheaper solution than roof racks and boxes.

Hi

Thanks for that. Looks like an interesting option. At the moment i like the versatility of roof racks and freeing up space inside but will see what i can find for a sensible price.

I assume that these dont fold out the way so large objects may stop boot opening?

Thought of doing a similar thing years ago with a bike rack that pivots down (thule)

G4 is definitely not silent, I noticed more wind noise on the motorway with it on. Also reduced fuel efficiency by about 2MPG.

The lower tailgate opens wide enough to allow the upper tailgate to open. The box needs removing to open fully.

I’ve realised my last post doesn’t make sense! I meant to say that the box moves enough to open the top section and the bottom section can be opened slightly with the box in situ.
