roof rails

hi all

as you may be aware i have a se model which does not come with roof rails as standard. now ! can these be fitted after the vehicle has been built as i have been informed that you have to have them as an extra when you order the vehilce so they are fitted at the factory.

is this true or is this info a load of Censored

cheers shawn

I'm bidding!

I've got the [LR Owners's site] installation instruction sheets if you wish.

Whilst the rails were originally a factory fit only option, when I was looking at Easter 05 they allowed the dealers to retro-fit for roughly the same price (c£160).
As far as I can see, the fitting is pretty straightforward. All you need is a hacksaw (!) and a spanner.

If you look at the roof, you can see the rail cover strips, which clip into place. These can easily be prised off, to reveal a couple of screws mounted onto the roof. The roof rails simply fit into these! The existing cover strips need cutting down to size (hence the hacksaw). Job apparently takes less than half an hour.

I seem to remember a post from early in the year where they had successfully fitted their own rails. If you don't fancy it then you could always pay the dealer for this simple job @£100/hr.

I was planning to bid too, so there'll be at least two unhappy peeps when the auction ends.
As an alternative, I was considering approaching my local LR dealer, where the service/parts manager has 'done a deal' in the past. So as to get the best price, how many people here would be interested in a set of roof rails and perhaps the bars too? I imagine it might be possible to squeeze a maximum 25% off list if there are enough people. (postage extra, of course, unless you fancy a trip to sunny but cold somerset).

I seem to remember that the standard list price of the roof rails is £120 plus 1/2 hr fitting charge. If you could get 25% off this then that'd make the price £90 - say £100 inc p&p. I would be surprised if the auction doesn't reach that!
Similarly there have been a couple of sets of roof bars offered by dealers at around the £105 mark.

What do you reckon - £200 all in for both inc postage? If we could get that price then I would think there might be a few interested members...

The roof rails are very light weight and the roof bars that fit to them are even more feeble. As the feeble bars attach to the lightweight rails with no more than a rather pathetc slot in system I am afraid that they will serve very little purpose once fitted. If Tim in Scotland is planning on stacking them high with windsurfers, kayaks, bikes and assorted other toys on routeto Tiree, I suggest you keep your speed down to less than 5 mph and what ever you do - don't brake !

The eBay ones are at £100 plus carriage. Cheaper to go to the dealer!
