United Kingdom 2005 Discovery 3 TDV6 SE Manual Aintree GreenDiscovery 3

Hey I meant as my car never had the plugs in . The old short rack was bodged in with m10’s

I got the extended one. Realised the plugs were missing. Bodged the new one which works fine. But I can’t take the cross bars off as the m10 bolt heads protrude in to the guide.

So I’m thinking of getting the button head Alan key type bolts. And cutting half the head depth off so they sit in the lower hole inside the rails and don’t protrude. As there’s 2 walls in the rail

I'd be interested to know too. I'll be swapping my FR rack onto the new car and on the old one I just used the M6 into the bolt, but would I be better taking the M10 out and bolting straight in? I assume if you do that you'd need some sort of sealant?

M10 goes in fine but the rails are double walled. So doth tighten them enough to crush the rail.

I got some black rubber grommets from my local Bevans shop in the plumbing section. Drill the inner to m10. And use as a washer. So you get a water tight seal externally. Maybe I’ve been lucky not o have a leak.

Don’t use hex head as the socket would be too wide and you’d need to bodge the rail by cutting away some space. Hence me wanting low profile Alan key type m10’s. So they fit in the rail guide. May consider drilling the top wall to allow the bolt head to drop down to the bottom wall like the m6 would have. So then the cross bars can be removed without removing the bodged bolts first.

Probably is a stronger hold than the m6. I’d say just do a neat job.
