Roof rack advice....4x4 goliath expedition V prospeed?
Hi Guys
We are currently looking for a full length roof rack for our 2013 D4. I have had a read on here and know that the prospeed ones get good reviews but not sure I can justify £1200 which is what it would cost with the ladder and the base plates.
We have seen these goliath ones from direct 4x4 but wondered if anyone had used one and could comment on it? My main thought was what the impact would be on mpg? We don't have a sun roof so opening this isn't a worry.
I like a flat rack because you aren't hindered by the sides determining what you can carry and how.
However, if you are going for a ladder, then go Prospeed. Its much better than the LR or other after market ones. New Defender L663 110 SE (known as Noddy!)

I have the ProSpeed fitted to my D3.
It’s expensive but v good.
Can also park in restricted height car parks or the airport.
Think you might struggle with the others as they’re a bit tallerformerly Disco3Ben

I've only ever seen one review for these cheaper racks and the bits which stuck our were that it was very noisy and wrecked what little fuel economy we have already.
Decent racks hold their value too, so I'd be inclined to go that way personally.2014 D4 XS

Thanks j@mes.... that was my concern. Looks like they are probably best for occasional use but we want one we can just leave on. May have to wait a bit and start saving for the prospeed then!!

My rack was on for 12 years and was only taken off a few weeks ago. It'll be going on my D4 this week. Never had any issues with carparks.
Have a look around on eBay and Gumtree and see what comes up.
Also, you will be restricted to what you can carry if you use a heavy steel rack.New Defender L663 110 SE (known as Noddy!)

Lol. You're driving a 3 tonne truck with the aerodynamics of a brick. MPG is probably the last consideration.
If it helps, my Old Bus averaged 26mpg in the 14 years I had her, 12 of which were with a rack.
As for noise, I never noticed it. New Defender L663 110 SE (known as Noddy!)

Lol....so I am learning. Would just be nice to stay in the high twenties 🤣🤣
FRONTRUNNER - owned one, great loadspace, noisy, - 3-4mpg, (Slimline II 300kg, Windcheetah 150kg). Add on wind deflector now available- should cut noise & improve fuel consumption)
FLATDOG & Bearmach do versions personally I’d avoid (have seen previous issues with quality).
Hannibal, Patriot & Big Country all do a similar version, all sturdier & load slats run fore-aft, all therefore quieter).
Direct 4x4 Explorer (55kg load), Goliath (NI load) & Troop (NI capacity) available from on eBay, steel, heavy & noisy also Fugly as IMHO.
Cargo Bear (NI capacity) - new to market, well made & modular.
Paranoid Engineering (NI capacity) - new to market, looking forward to having a poke around one when I get chance.
One thing to bear in mind is that LR state load capacity on roof is 75kg, though I & many others have regularly carried more without issue
Hope that helps.
Paul.

Wow jester thanks for that! I will check out some of the others on your list. The prospeed does look nice so I am beginning to think we just need to save up a bit more and go for that!

Thanks moo..... would have been a possible but as ours is black we are looking for a black rack and ideally full length. Will definitely need to keep an eye on here as we aren't in a rush and don't need it till July worse case. If you hear of anything feel free to pm3👍
