I'm half way through changing the oil on my 8spd gearbox now.

Draining the oil was easy, and no need for special tools. Plenty of room underneath when in offroad height with axle stands.

I left it to dribble out over night, and filled it in the morning. I managed to pump in just over 4 litres which surprised me. After exercising the gears as in Robbie's instructions, I managed to get some more in. It then took an hour and a half to get up to 69 degrees at idle speed. No more dribbles coming out....until.. I exercised the gears again once up to temperature and revved it to 2000rpm for 30s then about a litre of oil came out again! Hmmm. Not sure what is going on there, but the net result is that I put in about 3.5 litres.

Now waiting for it to cool to 30 degrees. Might take a while as it's a hot day..

Then recheck level, filler plug back in, reset adaptations and enjoy my slightly happier gearbox.

I left mine to cool overnight before the final check and got another half litre in.

All done. It took eight hours to cool to 30C. Next time I'll miss out the gear selection once the oil is up to temperature (Step 14 in Robbie's guide), and just go straight to checking the level once cool. When the oil is hot and the engine running, a fair bit of now dirty oil spewed out. Once cool that same volume had to go back in.
Seems smoother on the road but not a lot of difference. However, the oil that came out was not totally black and still had a greenish tinge and smelt the same as the new stuff so probably had a bit of life left in it.
Overall a fairly easy job. Thanks, Robbie for the guide.

I've just bought my D4 HP8 and want to do the gear fluid. It's done 93k with no record of any fluid change. Is it a good idea to change the sump & filter now or do one fluid change first and then a second a bit later with the sump pan?

I’m not sure if the sump and filter is necessary on the HP8. Just the oil change.

It's not knowing the cars work history that has me wanting to change the filter, if it's done a lot of towing or off road then I'm expecting more sludge. I've seen a couple of ZF video's now where there's a fair amount of sludge in the sump around the magnets. Better out than in I think.

Loking to do an oil change myself. Been looking at alternatives to the zf oil due to cost...

Is this ok?

Says it's suitable as an alternative for ZF Lifeguard 8, but wanted to check with you lot first.

Does the atf oil still go to the radiator for cooling? Or is it a different?

It does, but there is a thermostatic valve involved. Until the oil temp gets very hot, it doesn’t open to send the oil through the cooler.

Anyone know the part number for the drain plug on the zf8?Just done my gearbox following Robbie's guide. Thumbs Up

Going to give it a couple of weeks and change again. Next time I'd like to swap the plug too.

Cheers
