It's not "Road Tax"
None of it goes towards roads, council tax pay for roads
In fact it's a totally stupid tax, it's an "Excise Duty" levied on the vehicle, but its a flat tax, stupid really but we pay it and don't seem to protest too much.

Indeed,Vehicle Excise Duty to give it its proper name....except they mention the word tax 14 times on the reminder, and issue me with a "tax" disc when I pay....
"vehicle tax" "car tax" "road tax" or VED,its been a general tax since 1937,but it would be nice (or maybe naive) to think,if you have to pay it to use your vehicle on the public highway, some of it might go to actually improving that public highway "Better to remain silent and be thought a fool, than to speak out and remove all doubt" ?.....what rubbish...

Seems that the best way would be to put a levy on fuel
You wouldn't be able to avoid it
Either if you car does low MPG you'd pay more because you pollute more.
or
If you had a highly efficient machine, you pay more only if you used it a lot.
Can't see why they don't do this, Oh hang on maybe they already do, and then change VAT on the tax itself.
So "VED" is basically a bonus tax

I quite agree. I do roughly half the miles in our D4 (£475) that I do in our Mini Dooper (£0), and combined won't do half what an average "rep" will do in a year. However, if a simple (and sensible) approach like you suggest is taken, just think of all the bureaucracy that would dispense of, and what would the Civil Servants at DVLA do?
Nay, it's a Government department. so they've got to keep it a complicated as possible and keep the "jobs for the boys (and girls)".
When do we start the protest?

Perhaps I could contribute a small rant?
Originally it was the RFL (Road Fund Licence) and did go towards road building and maintenance just like National Insurance 'contributions' were once pooled to pay for pensions, NHS etc but both are now simply fraudulent titles disguising general taxation ie our money that disappears into the bottomless pit of government expenditure!
There, I feel better now! 2010 D4 HSE Ipanema Sand on GY DTs (was on GG ATs)
