I've got this in wrong section perhaps admin could shift it to D3 general
You raise another point are the crankshaft end bearings crimped or will they revovle then you have the camshaft shells are the crimped? For a vehicle that's ment to be all singing and dancing my wife's sx4 aerio beats it hands down and this really pauses me of go through a puddle and it all comes up on the windscreen like a God almighty flood do it with the wife's car and it's like parting the waves time for a jd blood pressures rising

Do you really want to weaken the bottom end even more with a new hole and possible stresses caused by fitting a dowl which if it moved even slightly would score the crank or fall out,l think that although some engines might be flawed the designers that made them were not complete fools and if it needed a dowel would have fitted one, just my opinion.

I don't see it weakening it as it is trapped by the top part of casting and shell therefore there will be no leaks
at present it runs like a sweety I have no confidence in this immaculate piece of design after joining this forum! I should have joined before wasting my cash
As for the manufacturer here's your answer what stops the shells revolving nothing! Wow that's really clever. Therefore if they are that clever then it must be deliberate.

Its not that simple, the shells are made to an exact size so when the caps are torqued the shells are nipped the right amount.
I still say they dont rotate for no reason, something has to fail/wear for them to move, you dowel idea might work, but if they even try to move dowels or not its to late and the damage is done.

You also seemed missed my comment that I made earlier that the tdv6 isnt the only engine to use this set up

Dont worry, the D1 both 200 and 300 and D2 also did the same with puddle splashes Mr. Green

Unfortunately seems to be a complete lottery, not one I'll be participation in from now on. As soon as I can't get a decent warranty for my D4 she'll be gone.

It will be a sad day when that happens Del.

I might have a fiendish plan. I bought the one on the right from my folks when they bought the one on the left. Unfortunately they didn't take the hint about going for Waitrose Grey but white is growing on me. Whistle If that goes ahead it'll be my 18th and prob last LR. Now that will be sad. Sad

PS And she has been washed since that pic was taken a year ago. Once!! Laughing

Cool Thumbs Up

I like the white. Would you not consider a RRS or FF rather than leave the LR family?

Hopefully a while away, aim to keep the present one until its 10, then poss buy the white one. It's a way away so will see how things go re LRs and other cars on the market. If I buy the Landmark it'll be my 18th LR (incl 3 RRs) so might be time for a change after that. But that's 10 years away, just got to make it that far. Thumbs Up

If you do a bit of research on the internet, you will see that the bearing tabs were used to assist proper location of the bearing during assembly. Bearing shell rotation is avoided by the crush effect when the bearing cap is torqued down.

If you stick the lower bearing back using e.g. http://www.loctite.co.uk/retaining-9171.htm

Then surely top one can't rotate?

I think the dowel idea could be problematic ... Flush when fitted maybe, but when whizzing round at 75 revs a second and expanding due to heat will it still be flush?

The adhoc nature of this issue in D3's early D4's was that the 1/2 shells were set in position and when the crank was offered it had to be turned slightly and from this there was a risk that some shells could also be turned which could block the the oil feed hole. The crank installation process and oil hole angle was subsequently modified for production ...ultimately though the number game is still within normal failure rates.

If you have got to 150k then you stand no more risk of it being this than any other reason for failure tbh.
