Replacing the D3 with a D4

The time has come to say goodbye to the D3 after 126,000 kms of good times and interesting times + maybe a few bad moments too.

13,500 kms with the caravan for 3 months has been the last trip and its time to update to a D4.

But, which one?

I'm sure there is plenty of you that have done this over the past year or so, its not such an easy decision this time. My daily drive is a MY10 RRS 5.0L V8 SC, hence the D4 will be the wifes car and the car used for towing and getting out and about our big brown country of Australia.

The dealer tells me I should stick to a 2.7L TDV6 with a few extras, 7 seat Leather pack, Xenon lights & E-Diff as a minimum.

To be honest, I really don't know.

Any help you guys can offer will be handy.

Cheers
Shaun

The 3.0l TDV6 is a great engine - a significant improvement between 2.7 and 3.0, even if the 2.7 has been remapped.

The 2.7 would be fine but if you are towing the 3.0L would be better. I think that the $ difference for the engine is a lot.

consider this?

both 2.7 and 3.0 are more than capable (but obviously I'm biased towards the 3.0) however the 2.7 has smaller brakes, not as good if you are towing alot as the larger ones fitted to the 3.0
It is better to have and not need it then need and not have it.

I know the 3.0L will offer considerably more than the 2.7L, but is it worth the $'s in Oz.

We live in the Adelaide Hills and as this car is now the school drop off and pickup, plus shopping cart it will heading up and down the hill upto 3 times a day, this trip is a little tuff of brakes going down, coming up the 2.7L does it just fine, but the 3.0L will do it easily.

As for towing, the 2.7L has towed the caravan well all it's life and the van has electric brakes so never had a problem pulling the whole rig up.

I don't want or need to penny pinch, but is the 3.0L really worth it for a daily shopping cart or is it everywhere else the 3.0L takes overs from the 2.7L in this case.

Thanks for that update, had a look at for photos, nice van, do you like the mchitch, whats the setup on the D4 when you are towing? I see you use rock-tamers, are you happy with them too?

Cheers

We haven't used the rock tamers yet. Brought set them up and hung them on the van on their storage mount.

The McHitch is great on the D4 side I use a 4.5t Rapid Hitch.

Go the 3.0Lt (I have one now). Had the 2.7Lt and would never go back.
Both for engine & brakes.

Ditto what Craig said, plus different gear box and probably better resale latter.
